Dr. Emily and staff went down to Fairbury, Nebraska last weekend to help out with a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (TNVR) event. There were 176 feral cats neutered or spayed and vaccinated at the fairgrounds in Fairbury. Fortunately the storm that rolled through the area the night before did not knock out the power to the building where we treated the animals, but there was damage outside and a power line down on some of the volunteers cars. It's not visible in the photograph, but that set of road cones was keeping people from approaching a power line down across those cars parked next to the building. We were happy to help out with the event!

🐾 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆" 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯: 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴

I was grabbing a drink at the @𝗢𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗿 last weekend and watching the "zoomies" in action. There was a beautiful senior Golden Retriever there who had their eyes locked on a pair of youngsters chasing each other across the turf. You could see the spirit of a puppy in their eyes—the front half was ready to pounce—but the back legs were definitely telling a different story. The owner looked at me and sighed, "𝘋𝘰𝘤, 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘵 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦."

It’s one of the hardest parts of being a pet parent—watching our best friends transition into those "golden years." We often mistake their slowing down for just "getting old," but at 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲, we see it differently. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲: Are they standing at the bottom of the stairs looking at you like, "𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴?"
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁: Sometimes "grumpy" is just a dog's way of saying they are uncomfortable.

We can't stop the clock, but we can certainly make it a lot more comfortable. 🐾 The "Forbidden Salad": Keeping the Spring Bloom Safe

I was walking through the garden center last weekend, and it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement. Everything is turning green, the tulips are popping up, and we’re all ready to turn our backyards into a masterpiece. But then I saw a pup take a very interested "taste-test" of a stray leaf, and I was reminded of the conversation I have almost every week this time of year: Dogs and cats don't have a "do not eat" filter for the flower bed.

In the exam room at Lone Tree Animal Care, we see a lot of "curious eaters." While we love the fresh growth of a Nebraska spring, some of our favorite local plants are basically a "system error" waiting to happen for our pets.

The "Stay Away" List for Omaha Gardeners:

🔴 The Lethal Lily: If you have cats, lilies are the big one. Even a tiny bit of pollen or the water from the vase can cause total kidney failure. They are beautiful, but they aren't worth the risk.

🔴 The "Hidden" Bulbs: Tulips and daffodils are spring staples, but the bulbs are the most toxic part. If your dog is a "digger," they might find a snack that leads to a very upset stomach or worse.

🔴 The Sago Palm & Azaleas: These look great on a patio, but they are heavy hitters when it comes to toxicity.

The Bottom Line:
We want you to have the best-looking yard on the block, but we want it to be a safe "playground" for your best friend, too. Take a quick look at the ASPCA’s list before you plant, and if you ever catch your pet eating the "forbidden salad," don't wait for symptoms to show up—give us a call right away.

If you are one of our clients that resides in Council Bluffs or the surrounding area, please consider attending the meeting, especially if you have stray cat colonies in your area.

OK Council Bluffs! Your City Council is reconvening on June 22 to talk about TNR. Three counselors are not currently in favor of allowing TNR, with one saying that he did not see the need for the services because he does not see a cat problem.

This is where you come in! If you are aware of a cat colony, live near one, or see cats around your neighborhood, please take pictures and videos and send us those along with some info about the cats and the approximate location of the colony. It’s really important to educate folks about the nature of the cat problem and why TNR is the solution, but cats are very good at hiding and so it’s time for us to shed some light on the extent of the community cats that are continuing to have babies in Council Bluffs.
