Look who it is! Our sweet, blind girl Bootsie is back in the spotlight! She has diabetes insipidus and also was completely blind and prone to eye infections. Under the advice of our trusted friend and partner Emily Whitehouse her eyes were successfully removed, and she no longer has to deal with pain.

She’s still able to navigate around without issue and has an excellent memory when she’s returning to places she’s been.

Now that she’s doing so well, we think it’s time to find her a home! She can be kind of shy, but when she likes someone you know it. She also really enjoys playing with other cats and having a best friend will help her navigate her space better. She receives a pill and a nose dropped twice a day and that’s all she needs to manage her diabetes insipidus.

Look at these two girls! Did you know that approximately 80% of all orange cats are male? For a female cat to get orange fur she must get an orange coat color variation in cells in X chromosome from both her mom and her dad (both of her X chromosomes have to carry orangr color cells). That’s why they are somewhat more rare than males.

We have several little orange girls in rescue right now, including Ferdinand pictured here (yeah she’s a girl).

Tortoiseshell cats are not rare per se, but they are predominantly female. In fact, only one out of every 3000 cat tortoiseshell cats born are male torties. The reason is also due to genetics. Because female cats have 2 X chromosomes, and each one can a carry a different cell with a coat color variation, they can have a combination of orange and black fur. Males have an XY combination, allowing for only one cell to carry a coat, color variation, which is why they typically show with either an orange or black coat color, not both.

If you’ve ever met a tortoiseshell girl, you know she’s pretty sure she’s the most unique kitty in the whole wide world. Flora is certainly convinced that’s true. Ferdy is not impressed.

"I’m sorry… we’re full.” 💔
Those are words every cat rescue wishes we could stop saying.
We’re full. Our foster homes are full. Our supplies are stretched. Our time is stretched. And yet somehow, the sick, injured, scared, and forgotten cats keep finding their way to us.
And the hardest part?
We can’t say no. 😿
When there’s a cat who is sick and needs medical attention… when there’s one who has been abandoned… when a frightened cat has nowhere else to go… we look at that little face and think, “If we don’t help, who will?”
So we take them in.
We make room where there isn't any.
We figure out the vet bills.
We clean cages, give medications, bottle-feed kittens, socialize scared cats, and spend countless hours making sure these animals know they are safe and loved.
But we can't do it alone.
We need VOLUNTEERS and FOSTER HOMES.

You don't have to be able to save every cat.
Just help us save the one who needs us🐾
We may be full… but our hearts aren't.

September is here and it’s HOT and humid in Omaha.

These little troublemakers were creating chaos and stopping traffic, so one of our longtime caretakers stepped in to help them. Here they are enjoying the air-conditioning just like the rest of us who refuse to step outside in this never-ending heat.

In all seriousness, it is very hot. If you can put a source of water out for the critters who are struggling against the blistering temperatures, we are sure they would be much obliged.

The concept of releasing very young cats after TNR really upsets some people. The reality is that this is the best possible outcome for cats who aren't friendly or don't have foster or adoptive homes. They can live out their lives where they are most comfortable, without being part of a vicious reproductive cycle that would endanger their lives and compound the cat overpopulation problem.

For those who are bothered by the thought of young cats living outside, we hope that discomfort is motivational in nature! Perhaps it could inspire someone to step up and foster, or to get their pets and colony cats spayed and neutered before accidental kittens inevitably appear.

If you find yourself disturbed by the abundance of cats or lack of resources you see in the world of cat rescue, maybe it's time for you to step up and help?

It’s Saturday and we have a story for you!

A while ago, one of our awesome trapper volunteers started helping a caretaker TNR some cats. These cats ended up being friendly and moving into her home.

Sadly, the caretaker’s housing situation changed and we ended up with an urgent situation that required a quick response in order to protect these cats and make sure they land somewhere safely.

And the next part of the story is where rescue is truly at its best.

We connected with our partner Felius Cat Café and asked them if they could help us save these cats. They put a call out to their own fosters and were able to place four of them into foster care. We have the remaining three in our own program.

We are all here to help cats in need. That is our focus and our passion. It can be so hard to help adults during kitten season when cat rescues get absolutely inundated with requests for help with kittens. Adults are no less deserving than kittens. We’re so glad these kitties landed safely and by helping them, we are also able to help a community member in need. Teamwork truly is the dream work!
