Okay, who ordered a "variety pack" of kittens??

Happy Wednesday from these cuties who appear to be a truly varied assortment. There's something for everyone here, from tortie to greybie and a couple in between!

Fun facts on this topic:

- A single litter of kittens can have multiple fathers due to something called superfecundation.

- Cat coat patterns and colors are genetic (though just like in humans, kittens don't always look like their parents). Coat patterns are separate from actual cat breeds.

- In feral cats especially, inbreeding is common, which can cause many cats within a colony to look incredibly alike, and unfortunately also causes health problems.

- Unless they're selectively bred, most cats are a genetic mishmash of domestic breeds. Though there may be a very small percentage of a certain breed present in a domestic cat's lineage, it is virtually impossible to find and adopt a Siamese, Ragdoll, Maine C**n, or Russian Blue without going through a certified breeder (which of course we do not recommend). Most cats are "mutts", and that's okay 😉

All of these factors add up to mean that kittens from the same litter may not look anything alike, despite being siblings. Each and every kitten's coat is a surprise!

The best way to start the week is always !
Our team is working hard to prevent kittens from being conceived and born outdoors before the coming winter season. TNR never stops, but doing as much trapping and rescuing as possible before extreme weather prevents so much suffering and saves so many lives. It's also helpful to address known colonies in the fall so that there are fewer litters of kittens in those areas once spring "kitten season" arrives and the population booms. Cat overpopulation is such a huge problem that we will likely never experience a year without kitten season in our lifetimes... But we believe that's a future worth dreaming of, and our volunteers work hard to realize that dream every day.

We have our first freeze watch this evening. Hard to believe just last weekend temperatures were in the mid nineties.

As a cat rescue, we keep a close eye on the weather. When it’s warm, cats are out and about, and making babies. When we have intense weather changes and big temperature drops, we get worried about when those kittens are going to arrive. In fact, we have been in TNR and rescue mode in preparation for the freeze and upcoming winter months.

We’ve gotten some more traps, and although we have fewer TNR appointments than we normally do, we are figuring it out. Also, we’re rescuing as many little and friendly cats as we can and making sure moms (and dads, and all the cats) get TNR’d.

There is something to look forward to as we get further into fall. We have our exciting fundraiser on November 21! This will help us pay for our efforts in the community. We also have a grant that will match up to $2000 we raise at this event! Please consider coming out, having fun, and supporting us.

Rescue work takes a village, and we are so thankful to have people who believe in what we do and help us give these little ones the care, comfort, and second chances they deserve. This tiny bebe is just one of MANY cats and kittens we care for on a daily basis. Food, litter, and vet care add up. All our fosters and caretakers are unpaid volunteers.
We are committed to providing the best care we can while stretching our donation dollars as far as possible. But the need is great, and the number of cats who need us won't go down anytime soon. We're on our way to winter weather, which means outdoor temperatures won't be liveable for these little ones. We will TNR and rescue as many cats as possible before the season turns dangerously cold. We will also continue to care for existing fosters to help get them to adoption day 🩵

Fall is in the air (finally) here in Omaha and we are here for it! We are hoping it slows down the kitten season so we can all take a break! Until that happens, we will continue to care for the precious babies that find their way to us.
