What is it like to find the right horse? 🤔

While in Apache Junction, Arizona, Dr. Bob Coleman sat down with two good friends of ours, Darlene and Ed, to talk about their experience finding, purchasing, and owning their Smokey Valley Horses.

Darlene had ridden Arabians for most of her life and, after years in the saddle, decided it was time to experience a gaited horse, a horse that could still give her the excitement and thrill of riding while offering a more comfortable ride on the trail.

She came to Smokey Valley Farm looking for the right horse and ultimately found her mare, Chantilly Lace.

But the story didn’t end there.

After seeing the experience Darlene was having, her husband Ed decided he wanted to get into riding too. The catch? Ed was a complete beginner and had never been a rider.

He wanted a horse that would allow him to ride alongside his wife, so he came to us and found a phenomenal Smokey Valley mare of his own.

Today, Darlene and Ed travel the country together, trail riding and enjoying the horses they chose to bring home.

In this interview, they talk about what they were looking for, why they chose to come to our farm, their experience trying horses, and what it has been like owning and riding Smokey Valley Horses.

We believe finding the right horse should be about more than riding one around an arena. It’s about taking the time to understand the rider, the horse, and what the two of them need from each other.

That’s why we encourage our customers to spend real time with their prospective horse or horses at our farm, not only in the arena, but out on the trail, experiencing how that horse handles different situations and getting a true feel for the horse they may be taking home.

Darlene and Ed’s story is a great example of what that process can look like, two people with very different riding backgrounds who found horses that fit their individual needs and now get to travel and enjoy the trails together.

If you would like to hear their story firsthand? Watch the full interview with Darlene and Ed on YouTube.

🎶 If this sound is music to your ears… you’re going to want to watch for Kitty’s Fire & Ice.

This is just a sneak peek at this exceptional mare and her beautiful 4-beat gait, and we have SO much more of her to show you next week. 👀

Fire & Ice is a double registered Tennessee Walking Horse & Smokey Valley Horse, bred and trained right here at Smokey Valley Farm in Olive Hill, Kentucky.

At Smokey Valley, we are extremely selective about the horses we breed, and Kitty’s Fire & Ice is a perfect example of what generations of careful selection can produce.

Her pedigree speaks for itself, with Gen’s Black Gin as her paternal grandsire, Jose Jose as her paternal great-grandsire, and Out On Parole (WGC) as her maternal grandsire, along with Pride’s Generator (HOF) and other proven performance bloodlines woven throughout her pedigree.

There is no coincidence between these phenomenal bloodlines and the natural talent Kitty’s Fire & Ice possesses.

This 4yo bay Sabino mare stands 14.3 hh and is a phenomenal performance trail horse, proven time and time again on the trails. She’s also no stranger to the show ring, routinely leaving local shows with blue ribbons.

She naturally collects herself, naturally engages her hind end, and carries an exceptionally smooth 4-beat gait all on a light keg shoe.

At 4 years old, Kitty’s Fire & Ice is at the perfect age for someone to take hold of a mare with this much natural ability, experience, and proven talent, while still having tremendous room to continue developing in any direction you choose.

And truthfully, she is a mare we have seriously considered keeping because of how impressed we are with her. But we also believe a mare this talented deserves the opportunity to go out, show off what Smokey Valley horses are all about, and do what she was bred to do, perform, compete, hit the trails, and thrive.

🔥❄️ Kitty’s Fire & Ice will be presented on The Horse Bay Website Wednesday, September 2nd. 🔥❄️

We’ll be posting more videos of Kitty’s Fire & Ice next week, and we are REALLY excited to show you what this mare can do!

Want to know more about Kitty’s Fire & Ice? Or interested in getting in touch before she goes live on theHorsebay website?

Dr. Bob Coleman, owner of Smokey Valley Farm, would be happy to answer any questions you may have about this exceptional mare. You can call him anytime!

Just a reminder to our endurance followers all over the country… we have a horse in our barn that we REALLY want to see become competitive in endurance riding.

🌩️Meet Grandy’s Stormy Night 🌙

6 years old, turning 7 in October, 14.1hh, black as night, gelding, and double registered Smokey Valley Horse & Tennessee Walking Horse.

And honestly… this little horse has a MOTOR. 🏎️

Grandy is extremely fast, has the stamina to go all day, and comes back ready to do it again tomorrow. He’s smooth as butter, carries himself beautifully, and is incredibly comfortable to ride.

And for our endurance riders, we think that matters a lot. When you’re riding 25, 50, 75 or even 100 miles, the horse’s comfort under saddle can make a huge difference for the rider too. A smooth, comfortable gait can help reduce rider fatigue over those long miles, because it’s not just about how far the horse can go, it’s about how you feel when you get there.

He has no shortage of trail experience and is comfortable riding out in the open. He’s phenomenal riding alone, confident going wherever you point him, and about as sure-footed as they come. He’ll climb, pick his way through rough country, and walk straight through water without making a big deal out of anything.

And he has so many of the qualities we love in a Smokey Valley horse, a natural smooth gait, big stride, stamina, sure-footedness and the willingness to keep going.

At 6 years old, Grandy is at a really exciting age for an endurance prospect. He’s mature enough to know his job, but still has a LOT of miles ahead of him. This is the age where you can really start putting those miles on and seeing just how far a horse like this can go.

We’ve always believed the right horse can change a rider’s entire endurance career. And if we had to pick a horse in our barn with the potential to become something really special in that field, Grandy would be one of the first ones we’d point you toward.

He actually reminds us a lot of Smokey Valley War Paint, the horse we sold to Tracy Fink who went on to make a name for himself in endurance riding. Tracy and War Paint have competed successfully in both the Southwest and Mountain AERC regions, with multiple ride wins to their name. We would never compare a horse who hasn’t competed yet to a proven endurance horse, but when we look at Grandy and ask ourselves, “Which horse has that kind of potential?” … Grandy is the one that comes to mind.

He’s gorgeous, athletic, comfortable, confident, FAST and he has that “keep going” attitude.

And maybe most importantly, he needs a job.

There is so much horse in this little black gelding, and we really don’t want to see that potential wasted. Put him in the right hands, give him some miles and a job to do, and we genuinely believe he could become something special.

We really want to see Grandy go to someone who wants to take him somewhere.

If you’re looking for a horse with the potential to take your endurance goals to the next level, come meet Grandy!

We’d love to have you here at Smokey Valley and let you ride him for yourself.
