Why is buying a horse at Smokey Valley Farm different?

Because we don’t believe in putting you on one horse, letting you ride around the arena a few times, and sending you home hoping you made the right decision. We believe the right horse should find YOU.

At Smokey Valley Farm, our goal isn’t just to sell you a horse. Our goal is to create the right horse and rider match, because when there’s a natural connection between the two, that’s where the magic happens.

That’s why we encourage our customers to come spend the day, or even a couple of days, with us. We have a variety of horses with different personalities, different gears, different strengths and different styles. There truly is a horse for everyone, and sometimes the horse you think you want when you arrive isn’t the horse you end up connecting with. And that’s perfectly okay!

When you arrive, we take the time to get to know you, your riding experience, your goals, what you’re looking for in your next horse, and what you want to be able to do together. Then, we’ll help you try horses we believe could be a great fit. There’s no pressure. There’s no one size fits all approach. We want you to take your time, enjoy the experience and feel confident in your decision.

We’ll start in the arena, where you can get a feel for each horse and see how you connect with them. And once we find one that feels like it could be the right match, that’s when we really want you to experience the Smokey Valley difference.

Our horses are bred, raised and trained to excel on the trail and that’s where they truly come alive. We’d love for you to join one of our staff led trail rides and experience your potential new partner outside of the arena. You’ll get to see how they handle the great outdoors, different terrain, other horses and riders, and the environment they were ultimately bred and trained to thrive in.

It’s one thing to ride a horse around an arena in a circle.
It’s another thing entirely to experience that horse doing what they were made to do.

And our relationship doesn’t end when you load your new horse on the trailer. When you take a Smokey Valley horse home, you become part of the Smokey Valley family.

Have a training question? Want to talk something through? Need a little guidance as you and your new partner get settled in? We’re always just a phone call away. We’re here to support you, answer questions, and help you and your Smokey Valley horse continue to be successful together.

At the end of the day, our favorite part of what we do is watching the horse and rider teams we helped create go on to succeed together.

That’s the Smokey Valley difference.

We don’t just sell you a horse. We help you find YOUR horse and we’re with you every step of the way.

If you’re searching for your next horse and want to experience a buying process that’s focused on finding the right match, we’d love to have you come spend some time with us. Give Dr. Bob Coleman a call anytime to schedule a visit and come experience Smokey Valley for yourself! We look forward to working with you!

We still have several of his offspring available for sale, along with several more going through our training program now who will be available once they complete their training!

Just look at that overstride!

If Stetson caught your eye, you’re going to want to take a look at his offspring. His legacy is still very much alive here at Smokey Valley Farm!

🚨SOLD🚨

THE ONE AND ONLY SMOKEY VALLEY STETSON!

If you’ve ever been to Smokey Valley Farm, chances are you’ve heard of Stetson. And if you’ve been here in person, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve walked straight to his stall to see him.

Stetson is a 10YO 15.2hh double registered TWHBEA+SVH gelding who has been an absolute icon here at Smokey Valley. For years, he was our top breeding stallion and he was given that job for a reason. He is the kind of horse we wanted to see his traits passed down through our breeding program.

We’ve watched his mind, conformation, stride, temperament and overall appearance show up time and time again in his offsprings and many of his babies have become highly sought after horses in their own right. Now, Stetson has officially retired from the breeding shed and is available to become someone’s personal horse.

And honestly, one of the biggest reasons Stetson was so valuable to us as a breeding stallion had nothing to do with his looks, It was his mind.

He is incredibly confident without being pushy, respectful of whoever is handling him or in his saddle and just an absolute pleasure to be around. He has that rare combination of being a big, impressive horse while still having a solid, trustworthy mind.

And he hasn’t lost any of that now that he’s a gelding.

Stetson regularly rides alongside mares without a problem and handles himself like the gentleman he is. He is sure-footed on the trail, crosses water, logs and bridges, handles steep inclines, and takes everything in stride. He is just as comfortable in an arena setting, making him the kind of horse you can take out for a Saturday trail ride then haul to your local show on Sunday to steal all the blue ribbons.

He has a beautiful sabino coat that gives him that blue roan appearance, a long mane, an incredibly thick tail, and the kind of beauty that makes you stop and look twice. His front end floating movement and huge overstride are exactly the kind of traits we’ve always admired for improving ride quality.

He stands patiently for the farrier, tacks up, loads and unloads, and is dog friendly, traffic safe and handles situations like the seasoned horse he is.

Dr. Bob Coleman owner of Smokey Valley Farm has gone back and forth more times than we can count about whether Stetson should stay and become his personal horse 😂But with how busy we are at Smokey Valley, Bob ultimately decided that Stetson still has way too much to give and deserves to go somewhere where someone can truly enjoy him and ride him regularly.

That’s what makes this one a little bittersweet.

Stetson has been such a big part of our program, and seeing him become a gelding and move on to his next chapter is a big deal around here. He’s not just another horse coming up for sale.

He’s the one and only Smokey Valley Stetson.

He’s always the horse people ask about. The horse everybody wants to see when they visit the farm. The horse who helped shape what we want a Smokey Valley Horse to be.

He’s 10 years old, seasoned, mature, finished and ready to go do whatever his next rider needs him to do.

Trail riding. Showing. Weekend adventures. Everyday riding. You name it Stetson is your guy!

And if you’re looking for a horse with the looks, the movement, the experience AND the mind to back it all up, this is one you’re going to want to come meet.

ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT TO PLACE YOUR OFFER ON GOLDEN GIRL!

Wednesday, September 30th is the LAST DAY to head to thehorsebay website to place your offer on this exceptional 3yo, registered Smokey Valley mare and the best acceptable offer gets to take her home!

GOLDEN GIRL is a 15.1½-hh classic ch*****ne Smokey Valley mare who has been an absolute knockout in our barn, not only because of her stunning looks, but because of her extraordinary natural gait, athleticism, stamina, and incredible mind.

Golden Girl is a true representation of what we strive for in the Smokey Valley breeding program. Smokey Valley horses are developed through Tennessee Walking Horse gene pools with a focus on producing horses with that signature long, powerful overstride and a naturally square, four beat gait, without the pace. We put tremendous emphasis on great minds, willing attitudes, intelligence, trainability, sure-footedness, and horses that genuinely want to please their riders.

Golden Girl is as natural as they come. She doesn’t require micromanagement to maintain her gait or keep her engaged. She is one of the fastest gaited horses in our barn, yet she is incredibly versatile. She can walk with a head shake, pick up and rack, and even canter under saddle.

She is also light in the mouth, extremely responsive, and easily guided with light hands. But despite having plenty of speed, she knows her breaks. Sit back, say “whoa,” and she is coming to a halt, giving you that confidence that you have a responsive horse underneath you.

Golden Girl has been ridden 4–5 days a week on long trail rides and is absolutely NOT a one hour and done trail horse. She can GO ALL DAY. That’s the Smokey Valley way. Our horses are raised and conditioned through the steep hilly terrain of Eastern Kentucky, where they learn to pay attention to their feet and navigate hills, rocks, trees, and challenging terrain with confidence.

She is sure-footed, athletic, and seasoned beyond her years. Although she is only 3 years old, she has the experience and maturity you would expect from a much older horse.

‼️ If you’re involved in FIELD TRIALS, you need to take a serious look at Golden Girl ‼️

She has been conditioned around the sound of guns, is comfortable and experienced riding with dogs, and has actually been trained to have dogs alongside her on the trail from the beginning of her training. She genuinely enjoys their company. Combine that with her stamina, speed, natural gait, sure-footedness, and ability to go all day, and she has the makings of an outstanding field trial prospect.

For the trail rider, she is just as impressive. She isn’t your typical nose-to-tail, slowpoke trail horse. She likes to ride. She makes trail riding fun again. If you want to leave the rest of the group in the dust, Golden Girl can take you there!

She’s a once in a lifetime kind of horse!

“Just a Trail Horse.”

SV Golden Girl is accepting offers through September 30 on The Horse Bay.

🐴 SV Golden Girl
• Registered 3yo Smokey Valley Horse
• 15.1½ hands
• Classic Ch*****ne
• Talented, confident gaited mare with a strong foundation in trail training

Before you scroll past a “trail horse,” consider what actually makes a great one.

A truly great trail horse has to handle changing terrain, steep hills, water, wildlife, unexpected noises and unfamiliar environments all while staying sane, willing and confident.

They need to leave the barn without a fight, ride away from the group, think through new situations and keep going without constantly needing to be managed.
That kind of confidence doesn’t happen over night. It takes miles, exposure, patience and careful training.

SV Golden Girl is a great example of why it matters. She isn’t just another pretty gaited mare who can follow another horse down a trail. She has the real world confidence and experience that allow you to get out there and enjoy the ride.

And then there’s the ride itself.

The Smokey Valley way of going is something special, an incredible overstride and smooth, comfortable gait that reduces rider fatigue in the saddle and allows these horses to have a walk & shake then step up into a beautiful 4-beat rack when asked. They can comfortably adjust their speed to what the trail will allow with the ability to travel anywhere from a relaxed 4 mph up to 20+ mph while maintaining that smooth, 4-beat way of going. That means you aren’t just getting a horse that can take you down the trail. You’re getting a horse that can make the miles incredibly enjoyable.

A horse you can trust to keep moving forward.
A horse that doesn’t need to be babysat.
A horse that lets you relax and have fun riding again.

That’s what we strive to produce at Smokey Valley Farm. gaited horses with the talent and to perform, paired with the confidence and dependability to enjoy outside the arena.

A great trail horse isn’t something you settle for.

The confidence, experience and dependability you want in a trail horse are built one mile at a time, through exposure, patience, training and countless long hours in the saddle. When you find a horse that has put in those miles and developed that confidence, you recognize the value in it.

That’s the kind of horse you seek out.

And that’s SV Golden Girl.
