It has now been about a month since I left my farm, the one I created, renovated, designed and loved for 2 years. The one my husband paid for, subsidized and worked so hard at after his days at his corporate job. This facility meant everything to me and I gave everything I had to it, the horses, cats and clients. Was I perfect, hell no. But the farm was mine and I shared it willingly every single day.
As I visit other farms up here in Ohio and talk to other owners, I am hearing the same things as I felt. This was never about the money and farm owners will never ever say it is. It’s about the love of the horse. Fortunately, Macy runs her business to match. Her existence in the horse world is true, honest and kind and about the horse. Her work ethic is unmatched, she can ride AND teach and the farm is truly blessed to have her. I love her more than air.
Here is my advice to the horse world. You even have a roof over your horses head, shavings in its stall, fencing for TO, a place to park your trailer et al because of farm owners. Then there are farm owners who go even further and continuously keep improving their farms as much as THEIR money allows. They quit riding themselves, they jump in and do just as much labor as those they pay. So before you think you are entitled to any of it, stop. We know you pay board and you can pay board down the road too. You have no clue what it takes to own, run and manage a training facility. I dont know how many of these conversations I have had with facility owners both before and after I left mine. What is going to happen when more and more of us close up shop because we just give up?
The fog is lifting, I am getting over the shock of why I had to walk away from it all. Farm owners are human, they are moms, wives, and people who deserve respect and kindness. I ask for a moment of pause before you complain about prices, standards and maybe that board increase to help pay for ever rising hay costs. Just stop. Maybe walk outside the barn aisle and look around. What you see exists for you so be grateful. Just be grateful.
