We received some very sad news today. A kitten that came into the clinic on Monday was confirmed to have rabies. This kitten was from PA but there have been a couple of cases in NY recently as well. It is so important to vaccinate your pets for rabies, folks.

This family now has to deal with not only the exposure to themselves, but all of their pets as well. I can tell you from experience that if your pets are exposed and they are not vaccinated, the health department will typically recommend that they all be euthanized.

Rabies is here, it is real and it is 99.999999% fatal. Contact your local health department for free rabies clinics in your area, many places have them once or twice a year. Family vets and pop-up clinics such as the ones at Tractor Supply are also good options. If needed urgently, we stock rabies vaccines in case your pet has an encounter with a possibly rabid animal.

As a reminder, we are open on July 4th, as we are on most holidays.

July 4th weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year. Last year, we saw enough patients that it worked out to about one every 20 minutes for the entire weekend. And these are not your average vet visits, folks. We're seeing everything from hit by car to poisoning to just terrified of fireworks to UTIs and everything in between. We're often squeezing in a major surgery like a foreign body or a c-section among those cases. We're giving blood transfusions, we're splinting legs, we're sewing up lacerations and bite wounds, we're hearing tragic stories while we help someone lay their best friend to rest.....and on and on. Our caseload rivals large practices with multiple vets on staff. We are handling this with one doctor and 9 staff.

We know that if you have to come see us that it means something has gone wrong in your life. You didn't budget the money, the time or the emotions to deal with this today. We get it. We do our best to make these tough situations as easy as they can be.

As always, bear in mind that we are human beings working as hard as we possibly can for you and for your pet. Each and every person who works at EMUVC is necessary and treasured. We have a zero tolerance policy of mistreatment of our staff. Period.

Wound care is AMAZING, y'all! Poor Jessie here had a surgery to remove a mass and had a horrible time recovering. The surgery was done on 5/21. She had been seen 4 times in between then and when we started caring for her on 5/30. This wound was tough - as you can see, it's on the inner thigh, so an extremely difficult place to bandage. Jessie had to wear a splint to immobilize the leg and keep the bandage in place. She came in daily for the first several days to have the bandage changed and the wound rechecked. The difference in just the first day is absolutely incredible, but we have the whole progression here for you.

In all, it took about 3 weeks from when we started treating until she was fully recovered and she'd been dealing with this for 9 days already at that point. Wounds like this can be very rewarding to treat but they take persistence and patience and a lot of collaboration. Jessie's family does not live nearby, but they invested the time and expense to make the trip to the clinic daily for care. Dr. Gies came in on her days off while the clinic was closed to continue the wound management - we were not about to let Jessie backslide!

This absolutely tracks with my experience. Folks, when we ask to test your pet for tick-borne diseases, this is why. Just look at this map! Wild!

“But my dog is on preventative” - yep, mine too and they still got anaplasma. One of them got it twice

“But I check them every day and I’ve never seen a tick” - yep, I never saw the ticks that gave my dogs anaplasma either

“But my dogs never leave the yard/are leashed/live in the city” - does not matter.

“My dog is vaccinated for Lyme” - ok! Now we’re talking! Very low chance your dog has Lyme then. But still possible and we also have to consider anaplasma or, much less likely, ehrlichia.

True, the test might be negative, but do we want to miss the chance at actually diagnosing the problem with one simple test? A negative test is very valuable information too, not a failure.

TICK MAP UPDATE: Many of you have asked for statewide data, so I've created a county-by-county map of New York. This graphic color codes each county based on the percentage of tested ticks who were positive for at least one pathogen (Lyme, for example). This helps isolate something of a "heat map" for where a greater percentage of ticks are capable of transmitting tick-borne disease by county.

Remember, not all ticks carry disease and not all tick bites will get you sick. However, it is very important to check your skin for ticks and pay close attention to symptoms if you think you've sustained a tick bite. Prompt medical treatment is crucial for mitigating symptoms and long-term health issues. Doctors I've spoken with recently have highlighted the increased prevalence of patients coming in with suspected tick bites this time of year, so it's very much a thing to be paying attention to!

Let me tell you about Panzer. He's a very handsome and gentlemanly Cane Corso with a laundry list of (thankfully fixable) problems.

Panzer came in with a urinary obstruction and he was sick, sick, sick. You can see in his before picture that he looks totally miserable, though he had a cheerful nurse!

Not only did Panzer have bladder stones, which are very common, he also had a large stone in his prostate, which is EXTREMELY rare in dogs! AND he was a cryptorchid, meaning that he had a testicle retained in his abdomen.

Panzer needed serious surgery - for the bladder stones, the testicle and most importantly, the prostatic stone. We at EMUVC diagnosed him, gave him stabilizing treatment, and then we contacted OPVMC to take over for the major surgery part of it. They did an amazing job and he came in a couple of days ago to have his stitches taken out! We could hardly believe it was the same dog!

This is the sort of teamwork that we strive to foster in our little corner of the world - we have to stick together and help each other. At EMUVC we are in the middle - we pinch hit for the family vets and we refer to the specialists. We are grateful every day for our colleagues who work together with us to take care of our beloved pets.
