Join me on the first couple days in the life of a kitten arriving in rescue .
Saturday evening we picked up the kitten pictured below after being contacted by the Rescue staff in Wichita. Due to his size and health status, he needed out of the shelter ASAP.
On Sunday he was weighed and evaluated. He appears to have the Calici virus which often includes eye involvement. He received his vaccination, worming, started antibiotics, antiviral medication, antiinflammatory and antibiotic eye drops. He weighed a whopping 1lb 2oz.
Sunday and Monday he was weighed and observed to ensure he was eating independently and continued his medication. His eyes began to show some improvement.
Tuesday, this evening, I spent some one-on-one snuggle time with him. I noticed what felt like a scab on his head, hidden by his fur. After cleaning and basic first aid, he appears to have an infected wound. He's already on antibiotics and now the wound has been opened up, drained and cleaned.
I also found fleas on him while cleaning the wound. This age is difficult since they're technically too small for standard flea prevention, so at 1lb, they're addressed as needed. So, fleas have been taken care of.
This represents the time, supplies and support just ONE kitten takes over 3 days and we have over 50 in care right now. We are all volunteers and do this as a passion, this isn't our job (that's what we do during the 8 hours a day we have left).
We're entering the time of year where everyone will be looking for donations. Unlike the big non-profits, we donate our blood (literally, bites and scratches are part of the job), sweat and tears daily. Your donation, no matter the size, makes a difference to us and goes to support the cats and kittens we save.
He still needs a name!
