Happy Haunt the Zoo Weekend! 👻 🎃

Back for its 43rd year, Haunt the Zoo presented by Oklahoma's Own News9 is a trick-or-treat event held on Saturdays and Sundays in October, from October 10th to October 31st, right here at the OKC Zoo. A limited, nighttime Haunt the Zoo celebration will be held Friday, October 30th. Guests can enjoy festive family-friendly activities, trick-or-treating, spooky photo ops, Halloween themed snacks, and so much more, all in the frightfully fun setting of the Zoo! We're throwing a party for not-so-little Kairavi! 🎉🐘

The OKC Zoo's Asian elephant, Kairavi, is celebrating her eighth birthday today! Kairavi is the sister to Achara, Rama, and our newest little addition, and is a proud aunt to Xerxes. Kairavi is also due to have her FIRST calf next September, so she's entering a very exciting stage in her life! Caretakers describe Kai as inquisitive and determined, and that she loves to interact with the little ones in the herd. Guests can often spot Kai and her sisters swimming in their pool or wallowing in mud inside Expedition Africa!

Celebrate Kairavi and wild elephants across the globe by donating to Round Up for Conservation! When making a purchase at the park, simply round up your change to the nearest dollar and your funds will go towards our conservation programs and initiatives, such as the Sri Lanka Elephant Project (SLEP)! SLEP is a research project that helps us understand how elephants and people can safely coexist across shared landscapes in Sri Lanka, and what efforts can be made to protect elephants in the wild. The OKC Zoo is also an AZA Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) Asian elephant partner, contributing to global efforts to protect elephants.

We're looking back on how it started vs how it's going with the OKC Zoo's giraffe, Kamili! 🦒

Kamili captured the hearts of our guests from the moment she arrived, and it's been thrilling getting to watch her grow into her personality — and height! Kamili was just under six feet tall at birth, and now she's almost ten feet tall. She still has a way to go before she can reach mom, Julu, or her fellow herd members, but she's still the tallest one-year-old we know! 🤩

We don't mean to badger you — we're just so excited for National Badger Day! 🦡

The OKC Zoo is home to two honey badgers, Gus and Kathy! As it says in the name, honey badgers are particularly fond of honey, specifically the bee larvae inside. 🐝 This passion for honey often causes human-animal conflict, as honey badgers will completely destroy bee hives when beekeepers are not present in their pursuit of larvae. This determination does come with a couple bee stings, but honey badgers have actually grown accustomed to them. They have incredibly tough and thick skin, which can tolerate hundreds of bee stings, porcupine quills, animal bites, and even snake venom! These animals are tough, intelligent, and brave, and have been spotted taking on elephants and rhinos in the wild!

Fun Fact: Honey badgers drop "stink bombs" when they feel threatened/want to mark their territory, which can be detected up to 130 feet away!

We're celebrating 40 years of our Indian rhino, Shanti!! 🌟💫

Shanti came to the OKC Zoo in 2019 and immediately became a treasured member of our Zoo animal family. Although we don't know her exact birthdate, we do know that Shanti is the OLDEST female Indian rhinoceros, also known as the greater one-horned rhino, in human care within an AZA institution. This is a BIG accomplishment for both Shanti and our staff, as they work incredibly hard to provide exceptional care to Shanti in her golden years. Caretakers describe Shanti as extremely intelligent and playful, and shared Shanti loves to wallow in mud and engage with guests during feedings. She can be seen inside Sanctuary Asia with our other female, Nikki, and our male, Mohan, who happens to be her grandson! 🦏

Get up close to this birthday girl by participating in a rhino feeding! 🍉 🥬 Feedings are available Thursday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to noon for $10/guest. Happy Birthday Shanti! 🤩
