The cats out of the bag — it's National Cougar Day! 🐾 Here at the OKC Zoo we call them mountain lions, but this North American species is also known as pumas, panthers, and many other terms!

Some of the threats mountain lions face in the wild include climate change, human-animal conflict, and trophy hunting. The OKC Zoo is home to two mountain lions, Tanka and Toho, who reside in Oklahoma Trails. Mountain lions are apex predators who are vital to ecosystems, keeping populations such as deer from reaching unhealthy levels. Mountain lions can also make jumps of over 40 feet, and are known as one of the most agile and powerful mammals in the United States!

Did you know cougars actually hold the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of names for one species? There are almost 40 different terms for the species Puma concolor, and that's just in English!

Visit the species of many names with a trip to the Zoo! You can purchase tickets 🎟️ today at www.okczoo.org/tickets

We're not lion — we're celebrating the ladies of our pride, Dunia and Moto! 🦁

The OKC Zoo's African lionesses, Dunia and Moto, are turning eleven-years-old! Dunia and Moto came to the Zoo in March of 2018, and were both recommended to be paired with Hubert 'Huey' (14) as part of the AZA's Species Survival Plan for African lions. Dunia has mothered the last two litters of cubs here at the Zoo, raising nine lions total. One of Dunia's cubs, Makena, gave birth to her first litter last year at Turtle Back Zoo, making Dunia a grandmother!

Caretakers describe Dunia as more serious, while her sister Moto has a tendency to be sillier. They also shared that Moto prefers to watch things happen from the side and occasionally likes to play with enrichment toys and cantaloupes, while Dunia is more of a fan of food enrichment.

Looking for some roar-some company? Dunia and Moto have got you covered! Make this week a Zoo week by purchasing tickets 🎟️ today at www.okczoo.org/tickets
