Oklahoma City Animal Welfare promotes and protects the health, safety, and welfare of pets and people in OKC. Each year, we serve more than 24,000 animals and provide sheltering services for Del City and Tinker Air Force Base. Our team handles adoptions, lost and found pets, and responds to reports of animal cruelty, injured animals, loose dogs, and nuisance or dangerous animals, enforcing OKC’s a

Why do we close our cat intake because of one disease?

Panleukopenia is highly contagious and has a high death rate. Treatment and care can be expensive and do not guarantee success. In some cases, a cat can show symptoms up to two weeks after exposure, and once exposed, kittens can succumb to the disease within 3-5 days.

Because of the nature of this virus, when a cat enters our doors, we need to keep them quarantined. This means we need extra time and resources for every feline in our care.

We are working to quarantine and care for the cats in our current care, but that is only possible by pausing intake of healthy cats brought to us.

DOGtober Festival is a great opportunity to connect responsible pet owners with local businesses and services that help pets live happy, healthy lives.

We've been fortunate to have incredible businesses join us over the past two years, including Hollywood Feed. Last year, when rain rolled through the event, they didn't hesitate to jump in and help fellow vendors protect their materials. Then, they went a step further by donating more than 20 boxes of high-quality dog food to help lift everyone's spirits.

Moments like these remind us just how amazing our community is.

From shelter pet to family member. Meet our next Happy Tail.

"This is Crush. 4 years ago, I walked into the shelter just wanting to find a companion to help me get out of bed easier. I never thought I would leave having found a new light that brings everyone around him pure joy and calmness. I remember seeing him eating his dinner at the shelter when passing by his cage and then he proceeded to start eating his kennel mate's food as well. That's when I knew he was going home with me. They told me that Crush was there for the 3rd time because he was found abandoned in a field each time. It broke my heart because he's actually the sweetest dog I have ever met and I work with dogs as well. Fast forward to more present-day things. He loves to cuddle close like he's one of my cats, he loves fruits and veggies for treats (apples are his favorite), he loves to put on pajamas for the winter nights to stay warm and he loves to dress up to go eat breakfast or shop around with me. He doesn't bark, he doesn't bite, he likes to watch wildlife roam around and sunbathe like a potato. Nothing will keep him from following people everywhere to see what they are up to either. He also loves his cat brother and sister and knows even though he's bigger that he is younger and listens to them. He is my heart and I am so happy that we got to be each other's light."

Financial difficulties can happen without warning. For some families, it may mean having to choose between paying the rent and buying pet food.

Fortunately, pet owners in our city have you, our 405 community, who is always ready to step up and help. From pet food to basic supplies like collars, leashes and harnesses, our Pet Food Pantry is here for those in need.

If you need assistance, visit our shelter. We are here to support you as a responsible pet owner.

If you are doing well and don’t need assistance, consider donating a box or two of dog treats, 2-gallon zipper bags or whatever you may be able to share.

Even better, check in with your neighbors and make sure they are doing OK. Let’s help each other be responsible pet owners and keep pets in our community at home where they belong.

Did you know our shelter is a drop-off zone for injured and orphaned wildlife?

Tuesday through Saturday, people from across the metro area bring us all kinds of wildlife they have found. From there, WildCare volunteers pick them up and safely transport them to their center, where they can receive the appropriate care. ️

This partnership is one more way we can all help keep the animals in our community safe. It truly takes everyone, and together, we are making a difference.

Because when our animals are healthy and thriving, so is our city.

Today is Friday, one of our strongest adoption days, and there are 44 pets ready to leave our doors at noon. Can you help us find them homes?

We have amazing pets like Tonka, A478119, a sweet 8-month-old who has spent a large portion of her life in a shelter kennel without a family to love her. She is one of seven dogs who have been with us since July.

Do you remember what you were doing in July? Because for these dogs, their life has been the walls of a kennel.

Please help us find eight loving homes today, so these dogs never have to spend another day on a shelter floor.

Our shelter cat intake remains closed as we work to control the spread of panleukopenia, both in our shelter and throughout our community.

We need your eyes to help keep the felines in our community safe. Stay vigilant and alert for any signs of illness in cats around you.

If you see a cat showing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, severe lethargy or weakness, contact our field team at 405-297-2255. If you can safely trap the cat, bring it to our shelter.

Our city covers more than 600 square miles. We need all eyes alert to help keep all the cats in our community safe.

If you were planning to adopt next week, keep in mind that we will be closed Thursday, Sept. 10. Our team will still be here caring for the pets in our shelter, but our doors will remain closed to the public.

Our field officers will continue their regular operations, so if you find an ill, injured or aggressive animal, you can call Dispatch at 405-297-2255.

We’ll resume regular operations Friday, Sept. 11. Remember, all adoptions are first come, first served. If you wait too long, the pet you had your heart set on may find a home with someone else.

Do you goat a minute to talk about the pets in our shelter?

When we say we are Animal Welfare, we mean more than dogs and cats! We regularly have farm animals in our care, and they are also looking for a home.

You can see what is available by visiting our website and selecting “Others” under pets available for adoption. That’s where you’ll find pets like Goatzilla A479749!

This charming goat has stolen the hearts of every staff member. His friendly demeanor and Oreo-like colors make him the perfect addition to a small farm. Goatzilla has a $100 adoption fee and is ready to go home today!

One lucky person will get this eco-friendly lawn mower, but there’s only one, so hurry up and don’t miss your chance!

Meet Polly Porkypants, A479760! An elegant lady who enjoys summer days in the kiddie pool, plenty of belly rubs and healthy snacks.

Lady Porkypants has been at the shelter for almost a month, patiently waiting for someone to give her a home. This red Duroc is available for adoption for a $100 fee.

If you were looking to adopt today but a dog wasn’t an option, consider giving Polly a chance. She will definitely make your days more interesting and fill them with charm!

If you’d like to meet Polly with the intention of adopting, please talk to our front desk team. Adoptions are first come, first served, so if you decide she’s the one for you, be prepared to take her home with your own appropriate method of transportation.
