An Update on Baby Atlas! 🌍
Many of you have been following my SB warrior, and I wanted to clear up a little detail about how he’s moving and even sitting.
A lot of people ask if Atlas is paralyzed. The short answer is: No, he is not paralyzed! In fact, it's quite the opposite... his nervous system is actively working.
Atlas has a neurological condition called extensor hypertonia in his back legs. Because of his mid-back spinal defect, the normal "relax" signals from his brain are getting intercepted. This causes the muscles in his hind legs to over-fire and lock completely straight, making him look a bit like he has tiny oars for legs!
The amazing news? He has full feeling, his toes curl, he can pee/p**p on his own, and his legs do bend when I give him his daily physical therapy. His nerves are alive and fighting!
Once a specialized neurosurgeon can operate and release the tension on his spine, there is a very real chance this leg stiffness could dramatically resolve. But if not he will just end up scooting around with his front legs with limited mobility in his back legs. Those little legs do work!! Just not how they should be.
He’s beating the odds one milestone at a time. Who knows he could end up the winner in a cat agility competition one day! We are thinking big 😻
