🔥 Why Does Your Cat Follow You to the Bathroom?
It’s Not What You Think. 👀🐾

If your cat scratches at the door 🚪, stares at you 👁️, sits by the tub 🛁, or insists on being your “bathroom supervisor”… this behavior is deeply instinctive.

Cats don’t randomly follow. They:

🐾 Feel safest near you when you’re “vulnerable”
🏠 See you as part of their territory
⏰ Learn your daily routines
🎭 Repeat behaviors that get attention
💧 Get stimulated by sounds, water, and movement
❤️ Mirror relaxed, unguarded energy

To a cat, a closed door is suspicious.
To a bonded cat, separation feels unnatural.

The bathroom is a small space full of smells 👃, echoes 🔊, running water 🚿, and predictable human behavior — which makes it fascinating.

And if you talk to them while you’re in there? 😄
You just trained them to come back every time.

Does your cat:

🐾 Sit and stare?
🛁 Jump in the sink?
🧻 Attack the toilet paper?
😿 Cry outside the door?

Tell us which one happens in your house 👇💬

🐾 How to Introduce a New Kitten to an Adult Resident Cat

Bringing home a new kitten? 😻
Don’t just “put them together and hope for the best.”

Cats are territorial. Slow, structured introductions prevent fear, aggression, and long-term stress.

Here’s the SAFE way to do it 👇

🏠 Stage 1 - Separate & Prepare (Days 1-3)

✔️ Set up a kitten-safe room
✔️ Provide litter, food, water, toys, bed
✔️ Keep resident cat OUT

This prevents territorial panic and gives your kitten time to decompress 🧸

👃 Stage 2 - Scent Swap (Days 2-5)

Cats recognize family by SMELL - not sight.

✔️ Swap bedding daily
✔️ Let them sniff each other under the door
✔️ Use treats + calm praise
✔️ Consider pheromone diffuser (Feliway)

No growling? No stress? Good sign. 👌

🍽 Stage 3 - Feed on Both Sides of the Door

✔️ Place food bowls near the closed door
✔️ Feed at the same time
✔️ Gradually move bowls closer

Food = positive association 🍗
We want: “That smell means something good!”

👀 Stage 4 - Visual Introduction

✔️ Use a baby gate or cracked door
✔️ Keep sessions short & calm
✔️ Reward relaxed behavior

Watch body language:
😺 Slow blinks = relaxed
🐾 Curious sniffing = good
⚠️ Flat ears / tail puffed = too fast

🤝 Stage 5 - Supervised Meetings

✔️ Short sessions (5-10 minutes)
✔️ Distract with toys
✔️ End on a positive note

If hissing happens - don’t panic.
It’s communication, not failure.

But no chasing, no forced contact, no yelling 🚫

🏡 Stage 6 - Gradual Freedom

When both cats:
✔️ Eat near each other
✔️ Play calmly
✔️ Ignore each other peacefully

You’re on the right track 🎉

Always provide:
🧼 Multiple litter boxes (n+1 rule)
🥣 Separate feeding stations
🧗 Vertical spaces (cat trees, shelves)
🛏 Safe hideouts

⚠️ Important Reminders

❌ Never force face-to-face meetings
❌ Never punish hissing
❌ Never rush the process

⏳ Most introductions take 7-14 days… sometimes longer.
Slow = success.

💬 Remember:
The goal isn’t instant friendship.
The goal is peaceful coexistence first.
Bonding comes later. ❤️

The Louisa McCune Animal Welfare Center is halfway complete!

Today the MAPS 4 facility was ceremonially “topped out," marking the halfway point of construction. The $42-million center is scheduled to be completed this fall.

The 70,000-square-foot animal welfare center, funded through MAPS 4, is critical to making OKC a safer and more welcoming place for residents and pets.

The building will have four entrances, one for each service: adoption, intake, training and the clinic. The center’s layout will improve the building’s flow, safety and hygiene.

The new facility will feature separate cat and dog kennel wings designed to create quieter, less stressful spaces for pets awaiting adoption. Each kennel room will include windows, so the animals get natural light. The new facility will increase the number of dog kennels to nearly 550 and increase the number of cat condos to more than 300.

The center will also include outdoor play yards covered with artificial turf designed for exercise and socialization, a training room, meeting spaces for events and educational sessions.

The new center is being constructed behind the current shelter, 2811 SE 29th St. Once the animals and staff move into the new facility, the old shelter will then be demolished, and crews will begin construction on a 2,800-square-foot barn adjacent to a pasture.

HSE Architects and Connolly Architects designed the center, and the general contractor is Crossland Construction.

🔥 Did You Know?
Female Cats Can Conceive Kittens from Multiple Fathers! 🐱🐱🐱

Yes - it’s real! And it’s called superfecundation.

When a female cat (queen 👑) is in heat, she can mate with several male cats during the same heat cycle. Each egg she releases can be fertilized by s***m from a different male.

That means…

🐾 One litter
🐾 One pregnancy
🐾 Multiple fathers

🧬 How Does This Happen?

During heat (estrus), a female cat:
✨ Releases multiple eggs
✨ Is receptive to mating for several days
✨ Can mate with different males

S***m can survive inside the reproductive tract for several days - so different eggs may be fertilized by different males.

Nature is wild 😌

🐾 What Does This Mean for the Kittens?

Kittens in the same litter can:

🧡 Have different coat colors
🖤 Have different patterns (tabby, solid, calico, etc.)
🤍 Have different fur lengths
🐾 Vary in size and build
👀 Even look like completely different breeds

Same mom. Different dads. Same litter.

🧪 Can You Prove It?

Yes - DNA testing can confirm multiple fathers in one litter.

It’s not rare.
It’s not abnormal.
It’s simply feline biology.

💛 Important Note

✔ This does NOT harm the kittens
✔ It does NOT mean something is wrong
✔ It is completely natural in intact females

This is one of the reasons spaying is so important - to prevent unexpected mixed litters and reduce overpopulation.

🐱 Fun Fact

Each kitten in a litter can have a unique genetic father - which is why one litter can look like a tiny “kitten variety pack” 😄🐾

Nature loves diversity.
