Full Circle Obedience

Full Circle Obedience The majority of dogs who attend Full Circle Obedience School will not earn titles.

Full Circle Obedience School opened April 3, 1990 with the mission of helping dog owners build good relationships with their companions through correct structure and communication. Our philosophy is that if the Director of an obedience school has no titles on their personal dogs, or hasn't helped at least a few students become nationally ranked, then there is no proof that the instructor's trainin

g methods truly work. They will become well-mannered, and trustworthy companions because they have been trained by instructors who strongly believe in lifelong learning and constantly look for ways to improve their dog training skills. Our professional, and positive based dog training classes are the key to happy dogs and happy owners. Full Circle Obedience School emphasizes that the proper relationship is the most important part of dog training; first being a leader in whom your dog can trust, then building cooperation through useful and easy to comprehend obedience exercises. We don’t just teach dog training mechanics, but instead help owners better understand dog behavior. We teach you how to train your dog to be the companion that will meet your expectations. Full Circle Obedience School classes cover basic obedience exercises, plus many solutions for home behavior problems. We teach you how to train your dog to respond to the first command even when distracted! We use motivational techniques that encourage the utmost in willingness from your dog.

Last week we gave you a list of our recommended release words to end the “stay” command. Now follow along as we put them together and introduce “stay” without movement from the owner 👋

We’ll start with the dog sitting at our side, eyes focused on us, then give the verbal cue “stay”. While they’re looking up at us, and continuing to sit still, we’ll mark and reward the behavior with a click and treat! 🐾

Then comes the release word! When the stay is complete, we finish by giving the release word, along with moving away to help build this association “my release word means stay is done and I can move”.

Eventually, you will work towards a prolonged stay where you’ll walk away from your dog then return to them.

Working on the stay command? You’ll need a release word! 🐕

A release word, or short phrase, lets our dog know that this exercise is complete! They won’t have to guess if it’s ok to move, and will begin to associate movement or “break” with the attached release word.

We discourage the use of “okay” and “come” as release words. Okay is found in our everyday language- the dog may begin to tune us out!

When we blend “come” with “stay” too soon in our training, we ruin the foundation of stay as the dog begins to anticipate the “come-when-called” command.

Watch along for a full list of recommended release words!

Training isn’t always picture-perfect... and that’s okay! 🧡

In today’s session, we’re practicing the “down” command - where Pickles feels so overwhelmed that she urinates and rolls over. That’s called submissive (or nervous) urination, and it happens when a dog feels vulnerable or overstimulated.

What’s great is that she still completes the exercise! Even while feeling unsure, she works through it - and that’s progress. Sometimes our pups will feel too vulnerable- we should never force exercises, and always end on a positive note!

Tips to help break the submissive urination reflex:

- When guests come over, NO petting or interaction for up to 30 minutes.
- Keep voices calm and excitement low.
- Let your dog settle before any attention begins.

Start working on this early! Submissive urination can become a lifelong habit.

We thought we’d reshare one of our previous lessons with a reminder! 👇

Dogs jumping isn’t always “bad manners” or a lack of training! Sometimes, it’s a stress response to a situation that feels uncomfortable or overwhelming to them. 🐕

In class and training, our goal is to work just under a dog’s comfort threshold- where they can still think, learn, and feel safe. We want to build positive associations with new exercises and environments. This is why we aim to always end sessions on a good note and leave your dog feeling confident instead of pressured! 🧡

Sometimes class exercises aren’t about perfect performance. They simply become “social visits”- giving our dogs the chance to observe and practice coping skills at their own pace. 🐾

When our dogs show nervous behavior, they need patience, compassion, and understanding from us! By listening to what our dogs are telling us, we help them feel safe, supported and ready to learn. 🦴🐶

Look at this sweet, spry boy! Don’t always let the age of a dog hold you back from adopting. I have a 14 year old cattle dog mix who is still going strong and at times is a nuisance like a puppy! I also have an 18.5 year old Italian Greyhound and a 11/12 year old shepherd/cattle dog/ pit mix. Never knew my house would be so active with all of these seniors!
Max seems like a true gem & a gentleman. He would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s home. Schedule a meet & greet with Max at The Village Animal Welfare!

EXTRA! EXTRA! SPECIAL HOLIDAY POST!
🐶🎄🎁

We've talked about our sweet senior Mister Max before, but we'd like to share more about him!

Max is an almost 12-year-old black and white mixed breed who came to us from an unfortunate eviction event, but that did not dampen this old boy's spirit! He has melted the hearts of all those who've interacted with him and is oh-so deserving of a warm and loving home to spend the rest of his golden years.

If you'd like to bring Max into your home by fostering or adopting, please give us a call at 405-751-4933!

🐶 Our dogs aren’t always jumping because they lack good manners! Sometimes their jumping is from stress. Like humans, it’s important that our dogs learn to build coping skills, instead of us saving them from every uncomfortable situation!

🧡 Remember that we are working just under our dog’s threshold, and always want to end trainings on a positive note!
