Allie Catalino and Chelsea Folmar for an in-depth discussion about the two most common metabolic disturbances in horses: Cushing's Disease and Insulin Dysregulation. 🌱🌷Spring is finally making its way to us and that means it is time to freshen up your horse’s wellness routine! 🌷 🌱

Spring is a perfect time to schedule a wellness exam to update vaccines and discuss deworming protocols. Warmer weather brings an increased exposure risk, and it is crucial to get ahead of the season. Our partners at AAEP separate vaccines into two categories core and risk-based vaccines. Core vaccines should be given to ALL equines annually and risk-based vaccines are more dependent on the individual horse. Our veterinarians are happy to talk to you about your horse’s specific needs for the season ahead.

The OCEC team had such a fun and festive week last week!🎄🍪

We painted our own portraits of Santa at Pinot’s Palette🎅, then wrapped it up Friday with a Christmas Party🎁 – great food, a white elephant exchange, and a scavenger hunt. Lots of laughs and great memories! 🌟

🚨IMPORTANT EHV NOTICE FOR OUR CLIENTS AND ALL HORSE OWNERS

There is an active Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) outbreak in Texas traced to a recent event in Waco. This strain is believed to be highly aggressive and has been fatal.

🐴SYMPTOMS
1. Fever
2. Nasal discharge
3. Hind end weakness or wobbliness
4. Loss of tail tone
5. Urine dribbling
6. Some cases progress to EHM, the neurological form of EHV-1, which is a medical emergency

🧬TRANSMISSION
1. Nose-to-nose contact
2. Aerosolized particles
3. Shared equipment (e.g. Water buckets, tack, grooming tools)
4. People (e.g. hands, clothing, boots)
5. From infected mares to foals

To keep everyone safe, we are advising the following:

🌡️Temperature monitoring at home
1. Please take your horse’s temperature twice daily (morning and evening) if your horse was at WPRA Finals or has been to any show or event in the last 14 days.
2. A re**al temperature of 101.5 F is a concern. Call us if you see a fever, nasal discharge, coughing or any stumbling/neurological signs

🚛“Stay on the Trailer” Policy for suspect cases
1. If you are worried about EHV exposure or your horse has a fever, do not unload your horse when you arrive at the clinic
2. Call our front desk from your vehicle on arrival and we will send our team to your trailer to check your horse’s temperature, perform an exam and collect nasal swabs to run stall-side EHV tests

Do you know how to recognize an eye injury in your horse? 👀

They can be easy to miss - but they are always an emergency. Even small injuries can become serious quickly. 🐴

⚠️Signs to watch include:
•Squinting in sunlight
•Tearing up
•Swelling/ Redness around the eye
•Cloudiness/discoloration
•Discharge
•Bleeding
•Rubbing Eyes on hard surfaces

If you notice any of these signs, call OCEC right away. Quick action is key in protecting your horse’s vision.
