When a dog finds a candy stash, chocolate isn't the only concern. Foil and plastic wrappers, lollipop sticks, and whole candies can get stuck in the stomach or intestines, especially in smaller dogs. Dogs don't unwrap first, and a dog who gulps a handful of wrapped candy can develop a blockage days later.

If your dog got into a bag of candy, give us a call even if they seem fine, and watch for vomiting, loss of appetite, or straining over the next few days. Call us if you need us.

Are spiders in Oklahoma dangerous to pets? Most aren't, but two are worth knowing: the black widow and the brown recluse.

As temperatures drop, spiders move into garages, sheds, closets, and woodpiles. Those are exactly the places curious cats and dogs like to explore.

Black widows are glossy black with a red hourglass underneath. Their venom affects the nervous system and can cause muscle pain, rigidity, tremors, drooling, and restlessness. Cats are especially sensitive.

Brown recluses are tan to brown with a darker violin shape on their back. Their bites often go unnoticed at first. Over several days, the area can become red and swollen and may turn into an open wound.

What about wolf spiders? They're big, fast, and common in Oklahoma homes this time of year. Their bite can hurt and cause some local swelling, but they aren't considered dangerous the way widows and recluses are.

To lower the risk:

Keep pets out of cluttered storage areas
Clear woodpiles and leaf litter near doors
Shake out pet beds and blankets stored in the garage

Early socialization is important for a puppy’s behavior, confidence, and development, but it needs to be done safely while their immune system is still maturing.

Until puppies complete their vaccine series, socialization should focus on controlled, low-risk experiences rather than public exposure.

Safe ways to socialize puppies include:
• Meeting new people in calm, familiar environments
• Carrying puppies in public instead of letting them walk on shared surfaces
• Short car rides or drive-through outings to experience sights and sounds
• Controlled playdates with healthy, fully vaccinated dogs
• Exposure to everyday household noises and routines

Avoid high-risk areas such as dog parks, pet stores, shared sidewalks, or places where unknown animals frequent until vaccines are complete.

Safe socialization helps puppies build confidence without unnecessary illness risk. Thoughtful exposure during early development supports better behavior and emotional health as puppies grow into adult dogs.

As the weather starts to cool down, where’s your favorite place in the OKC metro to walk your dog? 🍂🐾

Neighborhood loop, local park, favorite trail, or maybe the drive thru line for a pup cup? Tell us in the comments so other pet parents can find a few new spots to explore this fall.

One quick tip while you’re out: fall can be a common time for dried grass seed heads in overgrown areas, so give your dog’s paws, coat and ears a quick once over when you get home.

Did you know socks 🧦are very dangerous to dogs if swallowed? ESPECIALLY if they swallow 19 socks like Gator did! That’s right…19 socks! Here he is after surgery, obviously rethinking his life choices. 🤔

Sometimes socks can pass through a dogs gastrointestinal tract without issue. But sometimes they get stuck, cause an obstruction, and require surgery!

Gator’s family knew something was wrong because he wouldn’t eat, vomited, and his belly seemed unusually big.

Radiographs showed a severely distended stomach and we went straight to surgery!

Now, a week later, Gator’s sutures have been removed and his life is back to normal - except that he’s been restricted from areas containing laundry baskets!

Is sugar free candy dangerous for dogs? It can be, if it contains xylitol, which may also be listed as “birch sugar.”

Xylitol can be found in some sugar free gum, mints, candy, baked goods and even certain peanut or nut butters. In dogs, it can trigger a rapid release of insulin that causes blood sugar to drop dangerously low, sometimes within 10 to 60 minutes. Larger exposures can also cause serious liver damage.

Early signs can include vomiting, weakness, stumbling, trembling, collapse or seizures. Some dogs may look completely fine at first, so don't wait for symptoms before calling.

Around Halloween, remember that candy isn't always sitting in a bowl. Gum, mints and other treats may be tucked into purses, backpacks or coat pockets that get left within a dog's reach. 👜🎃

And before sharing peanut butter with your pup, always check the ingredient label!

If you think your dog got into anything containing xylitol, call us right away at (405) 848-3329. After hours, contact your nearest emergency animal hospital.
