Mars may be named after a planet, but according to his mom, his spatial awareness is not exactly out of this world! 🪐🐶
While playing outside, Mars ran into a wooden children’s climbing structure and ended up with a laceration beneath his eye. Because the injury was in such a sensitive location, we sedated him so our team could safely and thoroughly treat the area.
Clipping the surrounding hair allows us to clearly see the wound and assess its full extent. Thorough cleaning removes hair, dirt, debris, and bacteria that could become trapped and increase the risk of infection. Sedation was especially important for Mars because even the sweetest patient may move unexpectedly when frightened or uncomfortable—and using clippers so close to an eye requires him to remain completely still.
Thankfully, Mars’ injury looked worse than it actually was, and sutures were not needed! He was sent home with pain medication and antibiotics to keep him comfortable and help prevent infection while he heals.
We hope Mars’ next outdoor adventure involves fewer collisions. Maybe his mom can install a tiny backup camera! 😂

Winston came to see us for a problem that was becoming a real pain in the rear! 🐶
For about a month, he had been licking and biting around his re**um. Although his a**l glands had previously been expressed, his owner had not noticed any improvement.
We performed a f***l test to rule out intestinal parasites, and thankfully, Winston tested negative! His a**l glands were expressed again, and he was sent home with allergy medication to help address another possible source of his discomfort.
Allergies can cause significant itching and inflammation, leading pets to repeatedly scratch, lick, or bite at their skin. If the irritation continues untreated, it can damage the skin and allow secondary infections to develop. Allergic inflammation may also contribute to recurring a**l-gland irritation in some pets.
Despite having everyone focused on his backside, Winston remained a perfect gentleman and was such a sweet boy! We promise we were laughing with him—not making him the butt of the joke. 😂🐾

When Vonn lost interest in his food, his family brought him in to help figure out what was upsetting his appetite. 🐶🩺
Vonn received an injection of Cerenia, an antiemetic medication used to control nausea and vomiting. Cerenia is not an appetite stimulant, but when nausea is the reason a pet does not want to eat, relieving that nausea can help them feel comfortable enough to become interested in food again.
A pet’s response to Cerenia can also provide valuable information. If Vonn continues to vomit despite the medication or his appetite does not improve, it may indicate that something more serious is happening. In that situation, we recommend prompt reevaluation and additional diagnostics, such as abdominal radiographs, to look for concerns including an intestinal obstruction.
We hope Vonn is feeling better and looking forward to his next meal very soon! 💙

Ever wonder what this funny-looking bed is? It’s called an ultrasound trough! 🐶🐱
An ultrasound trough is a padded, V-shaped piece of equipment that supports our patients while they lie safely and comfortably on their backs for an abdominal ultrasound. It helps keep the body properly positioned and reduces movement, allowing our team to obtain clearer images of the organs inside the abdomen.
The soft padding keeps our patients comfortable throughout the scan—but judging by some of the looks we receive, they are not always convinced! 😂 Their faces often seem to say, “You expect me to lie like this for how long?”
It may look a little silly, but the trough is a simple tool that helps us perform important diagnostic imaging safely, comfortably, and effectively. 💙

Needle-less to say, Charlie made a very questionable snack choice! 🪡🐶
While Charlie’s owners were away, he decided the sewing supplies near his sitter looked tasty and attempted to swallow a needle. When he began coughing and hacking profusely, his attentive sitter immediately rushed him to City Paws Urgent Care.
We obtained radiographs to confirm that Charlie had swallowed the needle and determine exactly where it was lodged. Thankfully, it had not traveled far. Our team was able to quickly sedate Charlie and safely remove the needle—with the string still attached!
Sewing needles can puncture the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, or intestines, and attached thread can cause additional damage if it becomes anchored or tangled inside the digestive tract. Charlie is one lucky dog—and very fortunate to have had such a watchful sitter who acted quickly!
We hope Charlie learned that needles are for sewing, not snacking. Next time, he should stick to treats that are a little less sharp! 😂

Pearl decided to try on some clothes for size—or for taste, in this case! 👕🐶
While her parents were away for a few hours, Pearl helped herself to a pair of children’s shorts and part of a shirt. Thankfully, she was brought to Urgent Care, where we were able to safely induce vomiting and retrieve the shorts in pieces, along with part of the shirt.
Prompt treatment is important when a pet swallows fabric. If the material remains in the stomach and continues moving through the digestive tract, it may become lodged in the stomach or intestines and cause a foreign-body obstruction. An obstruction can prevent food and fluid from passing normally and may require emergency surgery.
Once the clothing had been retrieved, Pearl received an antiemetic medication to stop the medically induced vomiting, settle her stomach, and help keep her comfortable.
We think it is safe to say that Pearl has expensive taste—she prefers her wardrobe freshly laundered and served straight from the closet! 😂

Poppy’s symptoms were a reminder that our patients do not always follow the textbook! 🐶🩺
Poppy came to see us for ataxia, which means difficulty with balance or coordination, along with excessive drooling and discharge from her v***a. Because she had previously been treated for a urinary tract infection and was experiencing such a wide range of symptoms, we performed bloodwork and a urinalysis to get a better picture of what was happening.
The good news was that Poppy’s bloodwork looked fantastic! Her urinalysis, however, confirmed that she was dealing with another UTI.
Every animal experiences illness differently. While some pets with a UTI may urinate frequently, strain, have accidents, or show blood in their urine, others may display less typical signs or several symptoms at once. That is why diagnostic testing is so important—it helps us look beyond the symptoms and identify what needs to be treated.
Poppy was sent home with medications to address her symptoms and clear the infection. We hope this sweet girl is feeling like herself again very soon! 💙

Talk about a bloody mess! 🩸🐶 Conway came to see us with a laceration on his ear that needed a little help to stop causing so much trouble.
A dog’s ear flap contains many small blood vessels and has very little tissue to cushion them, so even a small cut can produce a surprising amount of blood. Each time a dog shakes their head, the force can disrupt the forming clot and reopen those vessels, causing the wound to start bleeding all over again.
We were able to sedate Conway, thoroughly clean the area, and repair his injured ear. He was sent home wearing a No Flap Ear Wrap, which holds the ear securely against his head, protects the repair, and limits the movement and repeated trauma caused by head shaking.
Conway also went home with medications for pain and inflammation, along with an antibiotic. His new headgear may not be his favorite fashion statement, but protecting that ear is always in style! 😂

Say cheese, Yoshi! 📸🐶 Just look at that adorable smile!
Yoshi came to see us after he began shaking his head, scratching at his ears, and crying out when he laid on them. His owner had also noticed a large amount of debris building up inside his ears over the previous two to three weeks.
We collected samples from Yoshi’s ears and examined them under a microscope. This test, called an ear cytology, showed an overgrowth of yeast and cocci—a type of round-shaped bacteria. These organisms can cause significant inflammation, itching, pain, odor, and discharge.
We thoroughly cleaned Yoshi’s ears to remove the buildup and medicated them to treat the infection. Ear infections are often secondary to an underlying issue, with environmental or food allergies being common triggers. When allergies inflame the ear ca**ls, they create an environment where yeast and bacteria can multiply more easily.
Despite his uncomfortable ears, Yoshi was the sweetest boy and smiled at us throughout his visit. Have you ever seen a more adorable grin? 🧀💙
