Today we arrive to the largest exporter of donkey and horse meat in the US. My mom and I started this organization to expand our compassion. The momentum is real right now, especially after the NYT article. But as we work on the back end to change the industry, there are still horses standing in k*ll pens who will never get seen, never get a chance. That’s why we show up. Over the past year we’ve rescued and transformed some of the most incredible horses and donkeys - given them sanctuary, training, care, support. Second chances. That is why we show up today.

This weekend is intense, it’s full of emotion and we make decisions that determine life and death. We ask for your support, we ask that you stand with us, as a community of compassion.

Today we arrive to the largest exporter of donkey and horse meat in the US. My mom and I started this organization to expand our compassion. Race horses, trail horses, mustangs, donkeys, Amish plow horses.. That’s why we show up. Over the past year we’ve rescued and transformed the most incredible horses and donkeys - created sanctuary, training, veterinary care, support. Second chances. That is why we show up today.

Lolli, Bugsy, and Annabelle were all rescued at the May auction. Lolli was an orphaned baby extremely underweight and needed milk 3-4 times a day to regain her nutrition. Annabelle was brought in with a group of 20 other mini donkeys. A woman had passed away so they took them all to the auction. Bugsy and her mom, Annabelle, are deeply bonded but were sold separately. When they got to us in CA they were both skittish and very fearful. Lolli was fearful as well but after a couple days of giving her milk she quickly realized we were her replacement ‘momma’. It took a few weeks for Annabelle and Bugsy to come around, and when they did, it was constant, all day, nonstop love. To think these three could have been sold separately terrified and most likely ended up in a horse trader’s hands, being traded from auction to auction, is beyond us. These three are the sweetest and most loving greeters at our barn. They roam free on volunteer days and actually wait for us to come out and give them attention. Creating second chances like this is why we show up. This upcoming weekend, we head to the largest auction in the America, where lives exactly like theirs are discarded, sold by the pound, traded, and face unimaginable fates.
Moments like this morning truly are the why.

The New York Times has brought the horse slaughter pipeline into the national spotlight - but this story is about so much more than wild horses.

This is not something that began with one administration, and it is not something that will disappear with the next.

For years, vulnerable horses have been bought, sold, traded, and moved through this system where their value is ultimately decided by their meat price and a price tag.

Thoroughbreds, Burros, Racehorses. Amish horses. Trail horses. Family horses. Show horses. Breeding horses. Wild Mustangs.
Funneled into one pipeline.

At Sun Horse Foundation, we are here to shine a light where there is darkness. To save lives. To expose what too many people never see. To educate our communities because we believe every life matters.

After all they have been through, peace is the greatest gift we could ever give.

Each horse standing in this pasture now was moments away from being loaded onto a semi truck and shipped across the border for their meat. Caught in a system so broken they were never even seen. Yearlings. Babies.
Some carry papers. Some were born free on reservation land. But unseen does NOT mean unworthy. They’re not broken, they’re not disposable. Just lives who needed one person to see them. And that was us. That was all of you — who stood by us, and gave them the second chance they never would have had.

After everything, peace is what they deserve.
