The Monster went home. This 42" Northern was an absolute blast to put together. My lovely 85lb assistant Chopper modeled for me just to show how truly large this fish was. She was my first Northern Pike ever mounted so huge thanks for the client in trusting my shop and my skill. I spent alot of time custom shaping the body to match her girth, length, and capturing the movement. I spent a lot of time detailing a bite scar just past the pectoral fin per (client request) whiIe also spending alot of time painting the head just like how her orginal patterns where which overall was my favorite part of this project. More fish are on there way back to life. Stay tuned!!

Wild Fact Wednesday, Hopefully over the past couple of weeks you guys have noticed the beautiful Monarch Butterflies have hatched and are filling the gardens and backyards with their vibrant colors and peaceful floating nature. These amazing creatures are actually poisonous due to the milkweed they eat. This protects them from a variety of animals from birds to toads. They are harmless to humans but we restrain from touching them out of respect and understanding of how fragile their wings are. Monarch Butterflies that hatch in the summer live up to 2-6 weeks. Then in late August we see the "Super Migratory Generation" hatch. These butterflies slow their reproductive system down, fly over 3000 miles to hibernate in the south, and return the next spring, living up to 7-8 months. Incredible. The Monarch butterfly is a threatened species (one step above being on the endangered species list) in the USA.

Wild Fact Wednesday: Rabbit or a Hare? Whats the difference?? Brown cottontails stay brown all year, running 18 mph on small feet and hiding helpless babies in nests. White snowshoe hares turn snow-white in winter, using massive furry feet to glide over drifts at 30 mph, and they give birth to fully furred, wide-awake babies ready to run. In the summer time the tail will give it away whether it's a cottontail or a hare bases on the fluffy white tail or the darker tail. Both are legal to harvest in the Small Mammal season with a bag limit of 20 total.

Bear hunting is officially open!! Hopefully all that hard work baiting will paid off. After the adrenaline wears off get the bear skinned and in a cooler or lay flat in the freezer over night then roll it up the next day and bag it. Bears have inches of layered fat and this helps prevent heat getting trapped causing rot spots in the cape. Below are standard skinning methods to whatever your heart desires.

Wild Fact Wednesday: Did you know that black bear's sense of smell is 7 times stronger then a bloodhound and over 2000 times stronger then a human. There short curved claws are designed for tree climbing to get to bird nest eggs, baby chick's, or just to check out the hunter in the tree stand. Bear season is just around the corner!! Good luck to all my followers and hunters.

Wild Fact Wednesday: It's a grizzly bear!!!! Nope we don't have Grizzlies in MN. It's a cinnamon black bear. Out of the 17,000 black bear population in Minnesota there are about 800 brown/cinnamon bears that have a gene called TYRP1 a mutation similar to albinism in humans. This recessive trait gives them a beautiful brown color to their fur ranging from mixes black brown to cinnamon. They are legal to harvest under standard Black Bear season.
