Wasatch Waggle Bee Company is locally owned and operated in Ogden, Utah by Entomologist and Beekeeper, Darren Blackford, and his wife Tonya Blackford. They have made their 5 year old hobby a family affair by getting their two children, Olivia (9 yrs old) and Emily (7 yrs old) involved in hive inspections during the season and honey extraction/bottling process in the fall. Their beehives are locate

d in backyards, rooftops of schools and businesses, orchards, and nature preserves scattered from Ogden to South Ogden. They extract and bottle their honey from their hives separately according to location so you may taste subtle differences in their raw honey. Behind the name: The honey bee waggle dance - the direction the bee moves in relation to the hive indicates direction to resources (nectar, pollen, water, new housing); if it moves vertically upwards the direction to the resources is directly towards the Sun. The duration of the waggle part of the dance signifies the distance to the resources.

Breathing through their sides. Insects do not breathe through their mouths. They inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide via holes called spiracles in their exoskeletons. These holes typically line insects' thoraxes and abdomens. Also bizarre: Insect respiratory systems are not patched into the animals' circulatory systems, as they are in humans, where the lungs exchange gases with the bloodstream. Instead, insects have a cardiovascular-like network of tubes, called a tracheal system, which delivers oxygen and ferries away carbon dioxide from each cell in the animals' bodies.
