It’s hard to watch our horses struggle, but if we interfere too much we aren’t really giving them the opportunity to find the answer. This is something I need to work on myself, avoid helping too much.
In this scenario, I’m using the bag as a fill in for a rider and letting her realize if she gets soft and relaxes, the pressure and excitement goes down.
Some people are not a fan of bags or tying things to the saddle, but I really like using it for horses like this to be sort of a test trial to how they handle stimulus behind their head.

Super duper exciting update about Oakley! ❤️‍🔥

We finally made it out of the round pen and into the open. She was doing everything right in the round pen, staying soft and listening to my cues. I figured arena next—why the hell not?! 😂

It was only her 3rd time loping under saddle and without a helper she did really good. When she actually tries she can be pretty smart. She is very dull natured and has literally leaned into my hands or legs because she doesn’t want to get soft.
Even saddling her, she will lean into you cueing her to step over.
I believe this is something she will get better with over time with repetition.
Good job baby brain!

Solo ride with Oaks and I! She did really well considering we had zero ground help and she’s known to be sticky. It’s really cool to see her wheels turning and actually trying instead of freezing up. She’s now starting to ask questions instead of simply saying “no”.

If I have one that’s real nervous and on edge, I’ll do some eye changing exercises.
To start, if you have a super waspy one, I wouldn’t hard tie them if they have a tendency to want to fly backwards.
When I asked Alaska to do this the first time, she was a high headed snorty flight risk..

Adding the pressure, allowing them to move over and then really think for a second helped her realize what I was asking was simple and the end goal is for their body to be soft enough to move over and then draw to you.
The more I do this, the better and softer she gets. It’s chefs kiss 💋🤌🏻
