🐾 WHY DOESN’T MIDLAND CAT WRANGLERS HAVE A BARN CAT PROGRAM? 🐾
We get asked this question a lot:
“Why don’t you just take the feral cats and put them on a farm or ranch?”
It sounds like the perfect solution. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.
Community cats are territorial. The place where they live is their HOME. They know where to find food and water, where to hide, where the dangers are, and often they have established relationships with other cats in their colony.
Simply trapping a cat in Midland and releasing it at a ranch somewhere else can be extremely dangerous. The cat doesn’t understand that it has been given a “new home.” It may immediately try to leave, become lost, or attempt to return to its original territory.
A legitimate barn-cat relocation requires MUCH more than dropping off a cat.
The new property must be safe and have a committed caregiver providing food, fresh water, shelter and ongoing care. The cats also have to go through a proper acclimation period in a secure enclosure before they can safely be released.
And even when everything is done correctly, relocation still carries risks.
That is why MCW believes TNR — Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and RETURN — is the best option for most healthy community cats.
Notice that last word: RETURN.
We return them to the territory they already know as home.
There ARE rare circumstances when relocation may be necessary because a cat is in immediate danger, and those situations should be handled individually and with proper relocation protocols.
A “barn cat” is also not a disposable mouser.
It is still a living animal that deserves food, water, shelter, veterinary care and someone willing to be responsible for it for the rest of its life.
