⚠️ SCREWWORM NOTICE FOR PET OWNERS ⚠️

The USDA recently confirmed a case of New World screwworm in a cow in South Texas, and a recent case involving a dog was reported in Lea County, New Mexico.

New World screwworm is a serious parasite that can affect livestock, wildlife, pets, and, in rare cases, people. Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae burrow into healthy, living tissue, causing painful wounds and severe infections.

🐶 Dog owners: There is good news. The FDA has approved Credelio Quattro for the treatment of New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older. In addition to protecting against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites, this medication can play an important role in protecting dogs from this emerging threat.

🐱 Cat owners: NexGard Combo has also been approved as a treatment option for screwworm infestations in cats.

As temperatures rise and pets spend more time outdoors, it is more important than ever to keep them on year-round parasite prevention and monitor any wounds or skin injuries closely.

If your pet is not currently on prevention, contact PETS Clinic of Lubbock to discuss the best options for your furry family member. Dogs MUST have a current heartworm test to receive medication.

🐾 Prevention is always easier—and safer—than treatment.

🪰 What Should Pet Owners Know About the New World Screwworm?

The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae (maggots) can infest and feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including pets, livestock, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. These larvae typically enter through open wounds or areas of damaged skin and can cause serious tissue damage if left untreated.

While proper wound care and regular monitoring are essential, flea and tick preventives such as Bravecto® and Simparica® have demonstrated activity against New World screwworm larvae and may help reduce the risk of infestation in dogs.

We encourage pet owners to routinely check their pets for wounds, skin irritation, swelling, unusual discharge, or other signs of infection. If you notice any concerns, contact your veterinarian promptly. Early detection and treatment are critical to achieving the best outcome.

If you have recently traveled to South Texas or Mexico and have concerns about your pet's exposure, we are here to help. Feel free to schedule an examination with one of our veterinarians or give us a call at (806) 794-9000.

SPOTS ARE ALL FILLED

Every day, animals in West Texas suffer because there are simply more pets being born than there are homes for them.

That’s why we’re excited to announce a partnership between our rescue and Fix West Texas!

On June 20, 50 dogs and cats will receive FREE spay and neuter surgeries.

Please note: We do NOT perform spay and neuter surgeries. All surgeries will be performed by Fix West Texas at their clinic. We are helping connect pet owners with these sponsored appointments.

Thank you to Fix West Texas for partnering with us and generously covering all 50 surgeries for our first clinic this month ONLY.

📍 Sign up in person starting 6/3 only at:
2230 W. Sycamore Dr., Odessa, TX

🕙 Monday-Saturday | 10 AM - 3 PM

• Limit 2 pets per household
• Dogs and cats welcome
• Reliable transportation required
• You must transport your pet to and from the clinic on June 20

Please do not sign up unless you can commit to the appointment. These spots are limited and intended for those who truly need assistance.

Fix West Texas believes in “No Birth, No Kill.” The most effective way to prevent animal suffering is to prevent unwanted litters before they happen. Every spay and neuter surgery helps keep animals from ending up homeless, hungry, neglected, or struggling to survive on the streets.

Our goal is to continue this clinic every month. To make that possible, we are seeking local business sponsors. For just $200 per month, businesses can directly help fund spay and neuter surgeries for pets in our community. 30 sponsors would allow this program to continue helping animals month after month. Sponsorship information will be posted soon.

Together, we can turn “No Birth, No Kill” into a reality for West Texas!🐾

2230 W. Sycamore Dr., Odessa, TX

🕙 Lunes a sábado | 10 AM - 3 PM

• Máximo 2 mascotas por hogar
• Perros y gatos aceptados
