I’ve been around horses most of my life and have spent the last 16 years studying their body.

I’ve studied numerous modalities. I am magnawave certified along with massage, myofascial release, taping and trimming. Understanding the feet helps the body. Recently I began studying brain based learning and neuro plasticity. This helps both horse and human.

The premium package helps owners with an individualized plan to increase functionality through specific exercises targeting their horses needs.

I hate the chemicals in fly sprays. We do everything we can to prevent flies but they are still going to be present to a point.

With the weather all over the place here in central Indiana, we have had blankets, rain sheets and fly gear on our blanket racks all at once! It seems as though we have turned a corner finally and maybe able to send the blankets off for cleaning!

As we step into fly season, there are a few things to consider. Can your horse tolerate a fly sheet along with fly boots and a mask instead of the gallons of fly spray that we hope will deter the little pests. The chemicals in fly spray are harsh so I make my own with essential oils and then switch between organic fly sprays and my home made ones, but truthfully how much do they really work?

Sometimes fly sheets can make horses sweat and cause them to rub and become itchy, other horses are quite comfy in the fly sheets. For comfort and health I prefer the fly sheets as opposed to dousing them with spray for 4 months and changing the delicate balance of their own oils and mineral balancing in their coat as well as influencing the sweat glands.

Did you know that fly spray can cause dirt to become trapped in the sweat glands as well as prevent moisture from getting into the glands? All of which can cause contact dermatitis in our beautiful friends. Now is the time to check in with your horse and see if he will happily tolerate a fly sheet!

Just something to think about before we get deep into fly season.

We’re heading to our fourth day of the hoof protection class with Ida Hammer.

I’ve taken this class three times and I’m still learning tons

I remember riding with Lee Smith and she told me something. I said “why didn’t you tell me that before”. She said “I’ve been telling you that forever. This is the first time you heard it”

And that is how learning is!

Ida will be in Green Bay twice this summer. In August, she will be at Twin Artesian Stables. In September, she will be at my barn.

See the classes below. If you need help registering, let me know

Jacob and I are down at Ida Hammers for a five day hoof protection class.

Yesterday was a lot of listening and today was more hands on.

Jacob was talking at lunch about learning and how hard it is for him to just sit and listen. He said he has a hard time retaining info that way.
Thankfully Ida’s classes have a lot of hands on.

It made me think about learning and how different each of us are.
-listening
-listening and taking notes
-watching
-doing
-doing while someone talks you through it
-feeling it

All of us are so vastly different. I taught a clinic on equine anatomy and gave a few exercises once. At the end of the clinic, I did a shoulder release on every human participant. After I did a shoulder release on one lady, she stated “now this all makes sense” because she felt it. That was eye opening for me as a teacher.

Other people have asked to watch and then it makes sense. I’ve had people color in class so the anatomy really sets in. For some people that was a great exercise. For others not so much.

If you are learning and it isn’t sinking in, talk to your teacher about how you learn. If you’re a teacher and a student is struggling, ask them how they learn.

We’re all different and thank goodness for that. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same.

On a side note, Ida is an awesome teacher and will be in our area in August and September!!!

A photo of my cute dogs just because.
