Real training. Real distractions. Real-world reliability.

Turn up the volume. 🔊

You’ll hear another trainer working a different dog just behind the camera, giving commands throughout this session.

And that’s part of what makes this footage valuable.

Watch Pedro remain engaged with Danielle, responding to his handler rather than getting confused or distracted by the commands happening around him.

Obedience isn’t just about knowing commands. It’s about understanding who to listen to, maintaining focus, and responding reliably even when the environment gets busy.

That’s the difference between teaching obedience and proofing it.

Real-world training. Real-life reliability.

From busy shopping centers to pet-friendly stores, we expose our dogs to everyday environments, distractions, people, and new experiences while reinforcing obedience, confidence, impulse control, and neutrality.

Our goal isn’t simply a dog that listens in a controlled environment. It’s a dog that understands expectations and can navigate the real world calmly and confidently.

At Specialty Dog Training, we believe exceptional protection dogs are more than capable protectors. They’re obedient companions who know when to remain calm and when to respond.

In our latest article, we explore what it really means to qualify for a service dog, including lifestyle considerations, handler responsibilities, financial commitments, and the important factors that contribute to a successful, lasting partnership.

Because the goal isn’t simply to have a service dog. It’s to build the right partnership between the dog and the person who depends on them.

When we say customized dog training, we mean it.

Every training program is tailored to the individual dog and the needs of their owner and handler.

In this case, that means building reliable obedience and communication whether commands are given from a seated or standing position, and teaching the dog to confidently navigate alongside a wheelchair.

Real-life training for real-life needs. That’s what it’s all about. 🐾

What does it really mean to have a well-trained dog?

It’s about much more than sit, stay, and recall.

With more than 25 years of professional dog training experience, our Founder & CEO, Graham Bloem, has worked with thousands of dogs and families — from everyday family companions and complex behavioral cases to service dogs and protection dogs.

One thing has remained consistent: lasting results require clear communication, real-world reliability, appropriate reinforcement, structure and boundaries, and a training approach built around the individual dog and family.

And just as importantly, training the dog is only part of the equation. Educating and empowering the owner is what helps those results last.

In our latest article, Graham shares some of the lessons and principles that have shaped his approach to dog training over the past 25+ years.

Little update on Miss Coffee, who turns ONE tomorrow! 🎉🐾

Coffee came to us at just 4.5 months old with severe resource guarding, major impulse-control issues, counter surfing (all four paws on the countertop 😅), and needing some immediate guidance.

She’s come such a long way. Today, Coffee no longer guards food or toys, has great leash and house manners, a solid recall, and has learned to disengage and avoid conflict around other dogs.

She’s not perfect—none of us are—but she’s thriving. And that matters, especially considering how serious her guarding was early on.

Huge kudos to her mom for investing in the training, sticking to the plan, and continuing the work at home. Coffee is a beautiful dog inside and out, and we’ve been working through some genetic challenges since her mom adopted her.

Here she is working at UTC Mall on public manners, engagement, obedience, and impulse control. 💪

We’re proud of this pup. It’s been a lot of work and a ton of fun. We’ll make a full before-and-after video someday, but for now, progress continues—and that’s what matters. ❤️
