Most horses are not being naughty.
They are confused. Or they are uncomfortable. Or they are being asked in a way they cannot answer.

A horse braces because the question does not make sense to him. He resists because the balance underneath is wrong.

He stops listening because the rider has been louder than the horse needs.

The first question is never how do I make him do it.

It is always: Is he able to do it, and have I asked him in a way he can understand?

That is exactly where the real work begins.

How are you all doing after another week with this heat? My friend Alex sent me this photo from her farm in south Georgia. While we don’t have regular in-person lessons, we stay in touch virtually.

As Alex would say, “Y’ALL it’s hot!!”

She reached out discussing their lack of training rides lately and what we can do during these scorching days. We have discussed the benefits of work at the walk such as walking over raised poles and are developing a gameplan to continue work in this heat.

Remember that some of the best work happens slowly: Lateral work, raised poles, and taking the time to improve balance, straightness, and relaxation which help build strength and understanding.
