Episode Two: Horse, Brush or Bear?
The name Shar Pei means “sand skin”—but not every Shar Pei coat looks or feels exactly the same!
The breed is commonly described as having three coat varieties:
🐴 Horse Coat
The horse coat is the shortest and most traditional of the three. It lies close to the body and can feel extremely coarse, prickly or almost sandpaper-like—especially when rubbed against the direction of growth.
This is the coat that most clearly demonstrates how the Shar Pei earned its name.
🖌️ Brush Coat
The brush coat is slightly longer and generally feels fuller or softer than the horse coat, although it should still retain the breed’s characteristic harsh texture.
Both horse and brush coats fall within the accepted Shar Pei breed standard, provided the hair remains short and bristly.
🐻 Bear Coat
The bear coat is longer, softer and fluffier, often giving the dog an entirely different appearance. It results when a puppy inherits the recessive long-coat trait from both parents.
Bear coats are still purebred Shar Pei, but their longer hair falls outside the written show standard. That simply means they cannot compete in conformation—not that they are unhealthy, poorly bred or any less Shar Pei.
Some people meeting a bear coat for the first time don’t recognize the breed at all!
No matter which coat they wear, underneath it is the same loyal, intelligent and unmistakably opinionated Shar Pei spirit. 🐾
