⚡ PEMF vs. TENS — They Are NOT the Same Thing! ⚡
Both use forms of energy, but they work very differently.
🧲 PEMF — Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
PEMF uses pulsed magnetic fields that pass through the body and induce small electrical effects within tissues.
Think: working through the tissue rather than simply stimulating the nerves at the skin.
PEMF is commonly used with the goal of supporting: • Recovery and rehabilitation
• Bone healing in certain medical applications
• Pain management
• Musculoskeletal therapy
⚡ TENS — Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
TENS uses electrodes placed directly on the skin to deliver electrical current to nearby nerves.
Its primary purpose is much simpler:
👉 Change the way pain signals are transmitted and perceived.
You usually FEEL TENS as tingling, buzzing or pulsing.
The simple difference:
🧲 PEMF = electromagnetic fields interacting with tissues
⚡ TENS = electrical stimulation of nerves to help manage pain
Neither is magic, and neither replaces diagnosing the reason something hurts. But understanding how a modality works makes it much easier to understand where it may—or may not—belong in a therapy program.
Different tools. Different mechanisms. Different purposes.
🐴 And when we're working with horses, reducing discomfort is only part of the puzzle. Finding WHY they're uncomfortable is always the bigger goal.
