Despite Annie's significant medical challenges, her new owners are dedicated to helping her recover.

Annie was among dozens of animals taken from a property near Dunnellon. When authorities arrived at the seizure site, Annie’s mother had to be euthanized, leaving the newborn without the antibodies she needed from her mother’s first milk.🔽

It is that bittersweet time of year to say farewell to the 2025–2026 Equine Medical Center of Ocala Veterinary Intern Class.

Interns quickly become an integral part of the EMCO family. They spend countless weekends, holidays, and late nights caring for your horses. Completing an internship at EMCO not only provides veterinarians with the hands-on skills and knowledge needed for success, but also creates lifelong mentorships and friendships. Congratulations Dr. Sienna Spaethe, Dr. Isabella Cerrone, Dr. Mariah Alexander, Dr. Michaela Gregory, Dr. Madeline Yokeley and Dr. Avery Fry. We are so proud of all you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next.

Meet Matt 💙

This 1-week-old American Saddlebred c**t came to EMCO unable to bear weight on his right hind leg. After evaluation and radiographs, Dr. Cullen diagnosed Matt with a severe displaced femur fracture — a very serious injury for such a young foal.

Femur fractures in foals are especially difficult to repair because the femur is a large bone that carries a lot of weight every time the foal stands or walks. In growing foals, the bone must be carefully lined back up and stabilized with strong plates and screws while healing, and there is always a risk of complications during recovery.

Dr. Cullen repaired Matt’s fracture using two locking plates and multiple screws to stabilize the bone. After surgery, Matt required weeks of intensive care with our Internal Medicine department including pain management, antibiotics, physical therapy, laser therapy, and daily bandage and wound care from our team.

Matt continued to improve each day and was eventually able to return home to continue recovery with his owners.
