Bella and Ruby may only be 50 lbs. but they are 50 lbs of love, comfort, joy and hope to everyone they meet. These poodles have been everywhere i.e. hospitals, conferences, assisted living facilities, memory care, hospice, disaster areas, rehabs, calming large crowds and community events. Job site visits to help improve productivity. They are not judgmental; they simply see people who may need a friend to bring them some comfort. They both have earned AKC's highest title for therapy dogs.
They have been sharing love and hugs and licks to those during difficult times for patients and family members for 5 years. They help fear become calm and loneliness become connection. They have made people of all ages smile when they haven't felt like smiling. Sometimes they even perform some tricks and even pray for people. They have even provided a bit of relief for first responders, so they can regroup and lift them back up to keep working.
Therapy/crisis dogs may not change what a person is going through, but they can change how they feel for a moment. Sometimes those small snuggles, head on their lap or kisses may be just enough for that person to take another breath, face another treatment, or to open up and share or for a stroke patient to speak when they haven't spoken or to try harder in physical therapy and providing the encouragement needed. They have reminded people that even on their hardest days a furry pup can bring them hope and a moment of joy.
Their footprints may not be big, but they have left them on countless hearts. They are proof that you do not have to be human to change someone's outlook. Sometimes hope and joy can come from 50 lbs. of fur and kisses.
