LUCKY STAR HORSEMANSHIP: What We Offer

This is just a highlight of Lucky Star Horsemanship offers to help to expand and improve your horsemanship, your horse based business and your Horse Focused event:

CLINICS: These focus on a specific topic or topics and are very structured. Participants learn a series of groundwork and under saddle exercises and get lots of attention. Clinics spaces are usually no more than 10 people and last a minimum of five hours (usually these are full day sessions). Clinics can happen locally (near Placerville) or at a selected location which is organized by a host facility (or individual). CONNECTION SESSIONS: These two hour, small group sessions are crafted to help you reach your goals while enhancing your connection, communication, control and confidence with your horse. Hosted at your facility these unique and very cost effective sessions keep you accountable and successful

THURSDAY COFFEE THOUGHTS - It's Fall of 2026:

Fall is a season of change. For us "down south" the heat/humidity of summer is beginning to fade and we are conducting training and business with more energy. We begin to plan for events and expos. We look at our program and evaluate our focuses. It is an inspirational time of the year.

As we look to the creation of Ronan's Run Ranch and the exciting programs/services we will be able to offer, we also look at our time on the road for Clinics, Expos and Travel Training where we can share unique and enriching experiences with great humans and horses.

2026 has been a year of changes and challenges! We are blessed to be able to do what we do and to share this journey with all of you! We look forward to seeing many of you in the months to come!

PRO-TIP WEDNESDAY: Firing A Client.

I guess this is the "written content" part of the season. Thanks in advance for reading!

This is a tough one. Sometimes the Client is not a good fit for your business. They “cost” you more than they are paying you. Too much “drama”, not following the program laid out, not doing their “homework” between sessions, unrealistic expectations, no respect of your time/schedule or skills…the list goes on and on. These types of Clients will sap your enthusiasm, your empathy and your overall well-being.

In the beginning it is hard to say “no” to a potential Client and even harder to let one go that is costing you unbudgeted resources because you have bills and are trying so very hard to build your business up. Yet, by taking the time to evaluate and educate your potential Clients of front, establishing and managing expectations and sticking to your general policies you can often reduce the number of “high cost” Clients you have. When you have to let them go, be clear, fair and kind in your communication. Simply express that you feel your program is not the best fit for them at this time, based on their needs/goals. You can even go so far as to recommend a different program! Then move on. No defence of your position, no negotiation. Just move on.

If you under promise and over deliver as consistently as possible, doing your best work with each Client and charging a fair market price for your services base on certain factors (we will cover this in another post), you can screen out the possible “high cost” Clients, and when you miss doing so up front just be ready to communicate your position and expectations respectfully.

HORSEMANSHIP MONDAY with Lucky Star Horsemanship!

ESSENTIAL SKILLS: A Good Equine Citizen - An Overview:

As we travel the county leading Clinic Experiences and presenting at Expos we encounter a common scenario: Hard to Handle Horses. This is even more challenging when the horse has to be boarded at a facility and the staff that works there. As a horse owner, we are obligated to ensure our horses are Good Equine Citizens!

What is a Good Equine Citizen? Here are some key points:
• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be caught and haltered with a minimum of fuss.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be lead without being pushy or a space invader.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one than is patient and respectful of the routine.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be backed up without having to tug on the lead rope/halter too firmly.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one turns to face you when you enter the stall.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one who can easily yield its hind end upon request.

So as a horse owner, you have to ask yourself “Is my Horse a Good Equine Citizen?” and “Is it a good fit at the boarding facility?” Be honest in your answer. If the average barn staff member cannot work with your horse in the manner noted above during regular daily operations then it is not a Good Equine Citizen. It then falls to you, the horse owner, to assist your horse to be more aware of the social contract of behavior so that they can be comfortable handled.

RONAN'S RUN RANCH - An Update: Happy Sunday everyone! It has been a busy time for us here at Lucky Star Horsemanship! In regards to RRR we have been meeting with various contractors/builders this week to discuss logistics and spec out the various buildings. Some work on the perimeter fences has also been done. Recently at a local festival we met some talented artists/craftspeople and picked up some decore items for the "main house." It is a process, crafting a dream from the ground up! Much like training a horse, it takes planing, listening, action and quite a bit of praying!

One area we are excited about is (and we are deciding on a name) is "Kenna's Cottages/ Camp Kenna" where we will be able to host a limited number of guests and their horses for overnight to show-season length stays. The goal is to provide reasonably priced stays (what we have seen out there is a bit pricey), while giving guests a cozy and safe place to rest as they travel through or show in the region. Of course the arena, trail course, obstacle course, barn area and specific pastures will be accessible too.

Should be fun!

LEARN HORSEMANSHIP!

Learning the Art of Horsemanship with Lucky Star Horsemanship's structured program will enrich the Student’s understanding and ability to truly partner with a horse, while learning the necessary skills to become an effective Leader. This program is MUCH MORE than just riding, it delved deep into the “Four C’s of Horsemanship” being Connection, Communication, Control and Confidence!

Highlights of what Students will learn:
• Connection – how to connect to the horse to create trust.
• Communication – how to “speak horse” in ways that encourage partnership.
• Collaborative Groundwork – to create a shared language and leadership.
• Horse Heath 101 – how to properly care for the horse.
• Building a Foundation of Trust.
• Cooperative Riding.

This program will help the Student to be a well-rounded, horse-focused individual who will be a great partner for the horse. Ideally suited to humans 12+ years of age, who want to connect with a horse and create positive partnerships. This program is FUN and IMMERSIVE. Each session is roughly 90 minutes in length and is VERY hands-on in nature! Sessions can be purchased individually ($120) or in blocks of five (5) sessions ($575). The program is hosted at our location in Marion County, Florida with our program horses. Weekday and Weekend session are available.

THURSDAY COFFEE THOUGHTS:

As you become more "successful" in your professional and personal life - especially if you rebuilt your business and personage after a big loss or life change - your "mean mares and haters" will come out of the woodwork! Like the hyena hunting a healthy lion...these mean mares, who have spent hours watching you, tracking you and waiting for the sign of weakness, will spring when they think the moment favors them. They get loud - keyboard cowards - on social media. They threaten you and your business. They try to tear down your works and demean your efforts.

And here is what is really sad...these people are NEVER truly happy. They never find joy in creating anything beautiful or meaningful. They exist with this negative energy constantly residing in their souls and never experience true Peace or Contentment. No matter who they are or what they attempt to do, they are pathetic and sad...deep down.

So if you are experiencing interactions with those petty "mean mares and haters", stay strong! Keep doing the good work you do. Help those you can. Stay focused on your goals and know that you - not them - are bringing some valuable to this Life. Celebrate your wins! You have earned it!
