THE BRIDGE - Level 3: Taking the foundation built using Collaborative Groundwork and building confidence with Cooperative Riding on the Bridge.

The training we do illuminates the horse's apptitude and attitude. Kenna will never be a fancy show pony, but we think obstacles, games and trails are her thing! Maybe cows this season can be introduced?

FENCE TALK FRIDAYS: Social Media & Marketing

Living in the 21st Century we are flooded with “social media” information on a daily basis. It is the nature of the world we live in. Reels, videos, stories, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube…the list of platforms is endless.

I had a friend mention that they do not market their business. That skill is their advertising. And perhaps in their market the “word of mouth” grapevine is enough to keep them busy. That is pretty cool! Yet, for many businesses that have a fair amount of competition in their market, some form of marketing/advertising is essential to garnering new business and keeping “the brand” in front of potential clients/students/customers.

Social Media is a method of marketing. A tool to share your message and – in theory – create interest in your business. Much like business cards and flyers did for business years ago, social media catches attention. Use the tools available and capture the business.

FEEL & TIMING!

Two of the hardest things to develop is your feel and timing. Yet with dedication, grit and patience you CAN hone those skills. In the early stages think about RELEASE. When the horse BEGINS to attempt to meet your request RELEASE. When the horse BEGINS to try to make a positive change RELEASE. Be quick as possible on the RELEASE and be sure to follow up with some affection (reward) to really drive home the message. Keep this as a primary focus when on the ground or in the saddle. Take your time and make sure the requests you put forth are CLEAR.

As the horse improves so will you. Remember “less is more” with a horse.

PRO-TIP WEDNESDAY: A Back-Up Plan Is Okay!

Are you just starting out in the horse industry?
Are you relocating your horse-based business to a brand-new market?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then it is wise to have a “back-up plan” to get you through the lean times and times of transition. This back-up plan can be anything from a part-time gig outside the industry to keep positive cash flow happening to investing in classes with your local Small Business Administration to ensure your business plan is solid and you can secure capital when/if needed. Maybe you host birthday parties or day camps as an additional revenue source. Whatever the plan is, remember that it is there to support your business goals!

A back-up plan is NOT failure or an option to quit. It is a solution to the issues we have all experiences when starting out, moving or even expanding our businesses. It takes grit, focus, fortitude and determination to develop success in the horse industry. You “do what you have to do to get the job done.”

If Lucky Star Horsemanship can help you along your journey just DM us here in our page or EMAIL us at [email protected]. Be sure to FOLLOW us for more tips and insights too!

READ YOUR HORSE!

In previous posts we have talked about “being Present” when working with and around your horse. This means AWARENESS of the subtle cues and communication the horse if giving you and adapting to meet their physical, mental and emotional needs “in the moment. It is great to have a plan when you get to the barn! The clarity gives the horse confidence. However, the horse may have woken up on the wrong side of the hay bale and may need something else OR many present an unexpected teachable moment that takes you in a slightly different direction.

That is OKAY! Adapt and grow together. Take advantage of those teachable moments and stay on course for the long term. Remember that this is a JOURNEY, not a race. Build the strongest foundation you can FIRST and the rest will flow with much more confidence.
