🐮 Emergency Calving Case Spotlight 🩺

Our team recently assisted with an emergency delivery involving a rare congenital defect known as Schistosomus Reflexus.

This condition develops very early in pregnancy when the fetus fails to properly close and form the body wall and spine. As a result, affected calves are born with severe malformations, including an exposed abdominal cavity, abnormal positioning of internal organs, and a dramatically curved or inverted spine.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but both genetic factors and developmental abnormalities during early fetal growth are believed to play a role. Unfortunately, calves affected by Schistosomus Reflexus are not viable and the severe deformities often lead to difficult births (dystocia), creating a potentially life-threatening situation for the dam if veterinary intervention is delayed.

In this case, prompt emergency care allowed us to safely manage the delivery and prioritize the health and welfare of the cow.

Cases like these are rare reminders of the complex process of fetal development and the importance of seeking veterinary assistance when calving doesn't progress normally.
