Dimby, Toky, and Mino, the three Madagascar sacred ibis chicks who recently hatched, have officially fledged!
 
Like many birds, sacred ibis are altricial, meaning their chicks hatch completely dependent on their parents for warmth, protection, and food. Over the weeks that follow, they gradually grow their feathers, build strength, and develop the coordination needed to become more independent and eventually leave the nest.
 
For the past month, their dedicated parents have worked tirelessly to care for their growing chicks, and that hard work has paid off. Now, Dimby, Toky, and Mino are taking the next big step in their journey as young birds!

✨ Adoptable Pet Alert! ✨

Meet Sunflower 🌻 At 11 months old, she was found as a stray after being hit by a car, resulting in the loss of her leg. After that event, it's no wonder she's a little slow to trust. Her foster says once you earn her trust, though, you get the most playful, snuggly, and loyal pup. She's always up for a game of fetch, tug with her foster's resident dog, or a car ride with the window down!

Sunflower just needs someone with the patience to let that trust build slowly. In return, she gives it all back. She's potty trained, easy at home, and has done well living with a dog-savvy teenager and another dog in her current foster home.

🦩 Meet the new kids on the flock (or should we say flamboyance! 😊)

Recommended through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), these five lesser flamingos recently arrived from San Diego Zoo Safari Park

At around 2–3 years old, they’re still got a few of their youthful gray feathers, but that iconic pink coloration is already beginning to show! Come meet the newcomers and the rest of the flamboyance during your next visit to the Zoo! 🩷🩶

Ezma is settling in beautifully! ✨

The trio, Layla, Bahir, & Ezma, are all hanging out on habitat daily! Layla and Bahir are older and not as active as Ezma, but that hasn't stopped them from becoming fast friends, showing her the ropes of her new space.

The Madagascar sacred ibis chicks recently had their first physical exams with our Veterinary team. Each chick was examined, weighed, and had a blood sample collected to give us a better picture of their health and determine their s*x.

The verdict? The chicks, two females and one male, appear to be in great health and are right on schedule with their development!

Madagascar sacred ibis typically fledge between 30-40 days after hatching, and two of the three chicks have already begun leaving the nest during the day, returning at night to roost. The third is taking a more cautious approach and hasn't made the leap just yet, but she's still progressing right on track.

So far, the chicks haven't required any intervention from Animal Care or Veterinary staff. Their parents have been doing a fantastic job raising them. Keepers simply make sure Mom and Dad have plenty of food available, including fish, insects, and their favorite mealworms, so they can keep up with the demands of feeding their three very hungry growing chicks. ❤️

Sitara Update! 🐅

Sitara is now spending lots of time exploring her habitat, resting, and enjoying her new surroundings and enrichment! Docents are often at the viewing deck to answer any questions and help keep the environment calm while she continues adjusting. As with all the animals at Oakland Zoo, she may still choose to spend time out of guest view throughout the day. We appreciate our guests helping her feel comfortable by viewing quietly as she settles into this next chapter. 🧡

For those who don't know her story: Sitara is a 13-year-old tiger who arrived at Oakland Zoo in July after being rescued alongside four other tigers after a lifetime of inadequate care. Her Animal Care team here at the Zoo is focused on building trust and supporting her wellbeing as she adjusts to a habitat unlike any she has experienced before. Despite some physical limitations, she continues to make steady progress and has shown a significant increase in comfort as she settles into her home.
