RBARI is a leading no-kill animal shelter dedicated to providing second chances, safe refuge, medical care, and forever homes to local homeless dogs and cats in NJ. (RBARI), the leading no-kill animal shelter in Northern New Jersey, is dedicated to second chances by providing safe refuge and essential medical and behavioral care, along with new forever homes to New Jersey’s homeless and abused dogs and cats. Focusing on animals with the greatest need, RBARI is especially committed to those often rejected, including seniors; urgent medical cases; and surrenders. RBARI regularly pulls from local animal control facilities, thus placing an emphasis on “local first", allowing us to impact the rate of euthanasia as well as reduce the homeless population. RBARI also supports the community, assisting in animal welfare emergencies and working with partner organizations to provide low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for communities in need. We also work with our TNR partners to help decrease the overpopulation and stop the cycle of homelessness and abuse too many animals suffer.

Meet Oscar, our petite little pumpkin (in avocado form)! This sweet guinea pig was surrendered after his family realized they could no longer care for him, and now he’s hoping to find a forever family of his own.

💙 Make an Underdog's Day: Jewel Is Ready for Her Happy Ending! 🐾

As we continue celebrating Subaru's National Make A Dog's Day and Subaru Loves Pets Month, we're sharing another very special Underdog who has overcome incredible challenges.

Sweet Jewel has fought her way back from trauma, and now she's ready for someone to give her the loving home she deserves!

Just 3 years old and 14 pounds, Jewel was hit by a car and suffered a severely broken pelvis. She was also already missing an eye, although she sees well with the other.

After months of strict rest, medication, and careful recovery, Jewel has blossomed into a happy, playful little girl!

Jewel loves walks, adventures, and spending time with gentle little doggie friends. She is full of life and ready to enjoy every moment of it!

Through Subaru Loves Pets, we're celebrating dogs like Jewel — the perfectly imperfect "Underdogs" who have so much love to give and are just waiting for a home of their own!

Jewel has already overcome so much. Now all she needs is someone to give her the happy ending she's worked so hard for.

💔 PUMPKIN UPDATE: One Surgery Behind Him, an Uncertain Road Ahead 💔
🚨 Foster Urgently Needed!

Our sweet Pumpkin has undergone surgery to remove his horribly injured eye and is recovering in the hospital. This little boy has already endured too much, and we're grateful that this pain is finally behind him – and so thankful to you and our partners at Pitties and Pals for making this rescue possible!

💔 Pumpkin's medical journey is far from over.

Once he has recovered from surgery, his veterinary team will assess his mobility and discomfort in his injured leg to determine if anything more can be done to save it.

There is still a possibility that Pumpkin will need his leg amputated. 💔

At just seven months old and 20 pounds, Pumpkin has experienced more suffering than any puppy should. We don't know how long he was living with these injuries before he was found, but we are determined to give him every chance at a comfortable, happy future.

In a heartbreaking twist, another young puppy named Candy Corn recently came into our care with striking similarities to Pumpkin — the same age, size, and appearance, and older injuries that had gone untreated. 💙 National Make A Dog's Day: Could You Make Tyler's Day? 🐾

Today, October 22, we're joining Subaru in celebrating National Make A Dog's Day, a special day dedicated to showing dogs a little extra love as we help shelter dogs who need us most.

Through Subaru Loves Pets, we're shining a light on the "Underdogs,” older dogs and those with special needs who are often overlooked.

🐾 Tyler, who may look familiar to some of you, is one of those Underdogs, and we're hoping someone will make his day (his life!) by giving him a loving home for whatever time he has left.

At 13 years old, Tyler lost his family, and a medical workup revealed even more heartbreak: significant heart disease. Tyler is now on medication to support his heart. We don't know how much time he has, but we do know that he deserves to spend it surrounded by love, in a home.

Tyler is a sensitive little guy who bonds quickly with people. He doesn't see or hear well, but he loves attention, short walks, and just being close to someone who cares. A quiet home where Tyler can be someone's cherished companion would mean everything.

💔 Two Young Puppies Found Badly Injured. Could Their Stories Be Connected? 💔

Just as we were sharing Pumpkin's heartbreaking rescue, another puppy named Candy Corn was recovering from surgery after being found with equally devastating injuries.

Candy Corn looks strikingly similar to Pumpkin. Both are about seven months old, weigh 20 pounds, and were found in Paterson with injuries that had begun healing without proper medical care.

There are too many similarities to ignore. We can't help but wonder if Candy Corn and Pumpkin could be siblings, or if they came from the same terrible circumstances.

Candy Corn was brought to us by Paterson Animal Control after being found as a stray, struggling to walk. X-rays revealed an older pelvic fracture and a broken femur that was healing improperly, leaving her in pain and requiring emergency FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery.

And then there's Pumpkin. 💔

Found abandoned with a protruding eye and an older leg injury, Pumpkin was rushed to the emergency hospital. He underwent surgery to remove his eye today, and we are awaiting an update on his condition.

Pumpkin and Candy Corn are exactly why RBARI's Community Pets Program is so important. Working alongside animal control and local rescue organizations like Pitties and Pals, we provide critical medical care and connect vulnerable animals with the foster homes and resources they need. Together, we can help animals who might otherwise have nowhere to turn.

We don't how these two almost identical puppies ended up injured and abandoned simultaneously, but we do know they have suffered far too much in their short lives, and deserve a chance to heal.

Formerly known as Hashbrown, this adorable little black-and-white kitten, complete with the cutest black spot on her chin, has found her forever home and a family who absolutely adores her! ❤️

Her new family shared a sweet video of GiGi enjoying playtime, along with a message that says it all:

"WE LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!!!!"

And we couldn't be happier for her! 💕

🚨 URGENT RESCUE IN PROGRESS: Pumpkin was Abandoned with Devastating Injuries 💔

His eye is severely injured and needs to be removed. His little body has been carrying a painful leg injury. At just 20 pounds, this tiny pittie mix has been suffering, without anyone to help him.

Please help us give Pumpkin the urgent medical care he desperately needs.

Found by Paterson police, Pumpkin was abandoned and alone, in heartbreaking condition. His injured eye was protruding, leaving him in unimaginable pain, while an older injury to his leg had left him struggling. Days, weeks – we don’t know how long he has been living this way without help. 💔

With Pumpkin in such critical condition, there was no time to waste. The police officers contacted RBARI for help and immediately rushed him to the emergency veterinary hospital, where he was stabilized and given medication to ease his pain.

Pumpkin is safe, but his injuries are severe, and his need for medical care is far from over. We are awaiting updates to understand the extent of his injuries and treatment.

We couldn't turn our backs on Pumpkin, and we’re asking you to help us give him the care he deserves. Every emergency rescue comes with unknowns, and we don't always have time to prepare for what lies ahead. But when an animal is suffering and needs us, we do everything we can to help.
