We will be closed this Labor Day, in celebration of all workers! May we continue to strive for a society where those who actually do the work are not just compensated fairly, but honored and celebrated. And while we’re dreaming, maybe a society in which worth and value of living beings is not tied to economic productivity and everyone’s basic needs are prioritized and met before anyone worries about shareholders? But we digress.

Our jujubes are popping off! Great for eating fresh, dried, cooking, or making tea, they are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support blood and qi of the heart and spleen (Talk with an acupuncturist for more info on medicinal uses).

We are going to have samples of so many varieties of jujubes at our El Sobrante Nursery today, so come on in for a taste test. Over 25 varieties! Then make a plan for finding space in your garden for some of these amazing plants. We’ve got jujube plants at both nurseries, so shop in person or online!

Have you been seeing posts about Black August and wondered what that was? No shame! Sever folks at PJ were also asking: ‘What is Black August?’

Luckily, some members of our Education Team put together this quick explainer to answer that question.

Born out of the 1970’s prison resistance movement, Black August is a month of remembrance for political prisoners, fallen freedom fighters, and the sacrifices made in the fight for justice, equity, and liberation. Black August began in San Quentin Prison in 1979 to commemorate the political assassinations of many influential prison resistance leaders during that decade, as well as the hundreds of years of Black resistance that preceded it. To observe Black August is to to reflect on and learn from the history of Black resistance, revolution, and the enduring fight for liberation.

Although this month originated in a very specific time and place, one of its key lessons is asking all of us to connect the dots from then to now and studythe ways prisons and police have been and still are used as tools to control and suppress movements for liberation.

Do you have a passion for exploring the intersections of environment, food sovereignty, abolition, and social justice with youth?

One of our Planting Justice educators is going back to school (bc education is a lifelong endeavor), which means there is an immediate opening on our Education Team! Also congratulations Maria! She is going to study geography and the environment to continue working in climate resilience and environmental justice. 🥹

Planting Justice Educators lead and support learning opportunities across internal and external sites, ensuring that education is mission-aligned, effective, and meaningful for systems-impacted youth, adults and families. PJ Education Programs take place in public schools, at community sites, at PJ nurseries and the Mother Farm, and occasionally within jails and prisons.

We are looking for an experienced, strategic, and people-centered Director of HR to join our leadership team and help develop our workplace culture and organizational systems, and empower and support the people at the heart of this work!

We’re looking for someone with:
- 5-7+ years of progressive HR experience
- Strong knowledge of California employment law
- Experience with employee relations & nonprofit development
- Experience leading HR strategy and supporting managers

Knowledge of restorative justice, liberatory HR, or similar frameworks is highly valued!

This is a Full-Time hybrid Leadership Position, split between remote and on-site work in Oakland & El Sobrante, CA

Spanish Summer Youth Cohort Week 2

Esta semana, nuestros jóvenes pusieron manos a la obra y crearon soberanía alimentaria al cosechar y cocinar juntos. El poder definir cómo se crían, se cosechan y se cocinan nuestros alimentos es una parte clave de la soberanía alimentaria. Nuestra primera receta de la semana consistió en crear sándwiches enrollados usando clorofila y hierbas frescas que cultivamos en nuestro jardín comunitario.

Mientras que nuestra segunda receta de la semana ilustra otra parte importante de la soberanía alimentaria, la comida culturalmente apropiada. ¡Mucha de nuestra historia e identidad se encuentra en nuestras comidas! We are putting out a bunch of rare perennial bunching onions that are ready for you to plant! We have been propagating them in Oakland and Sacramento for several seasons, and they all do very well here.

Perennial alliums are hardy, low-maintenance herbs that provide continuous harvests of onion, garlic, and chive flavors year after year without replanting. This diverse group includes walking onions, multiplier shallots, garlic chives, bunching onions, and various perennial leek relatives that return reliably each season with vigorous growth. Unlike annual onions and garlic that require yearly planting and soil preparation, perennial alliums establish permanent patches that produce edible greens, bulbs, and flowers for decades with minimal care.

We have fresh stock of the Sibuyas Tagalog, I’Itoi, and Akakai bunching onions, and a refresh of McCullars White Walking Onion. Learn more about the unique characteristics of each on our website and get these rare varieties while you can!
