This boy was skunked! His owner used a hydrogen peroxide mix to combat smell and it lightened his coat giving him a brassy coat color. π
I took this photo to show his true coat color vs the peroxide lightened coat! He is odor free and that's what matters.
This is also a friendly reminder to never wet your dog with water first when your pet has been skunked! A skunk sprays a secretion which is a yellow oil that will cling to most surfaces and, like all oils, it does not mix with water. Skunk spray contains several compounds that are responsible for its terrible smell. These compounds are thiols or thioacetates. Thiols bind strongly and rapidly to skin proteins.
Although thioacetates are usually less smelly than thiols, they are converted into thiols when they are mixed with water β which is why skunk odor becomes more pungent when the animal becomes wet.
The most common at home remedy is to mix 3-4 parts hydrogen peroxide to 1 part of baking soda, with a teaspoon of dish detergent and apply to the skunked area on your pet and let it sit for a couple minutes. Do NOT apply around the eyes, this will cause irritation. There are also solutions sold online that you can use as well to combat that skunk odor!
We hope you have a wonderful day and remember to not lock in that foul skunk odor with water! π
