Tis the season!! A very common complaint we see this time of year is too much scratching and itching. A seasonal allergy, or atopy, is our #1 reason for seeing companion animals in the fall. While most humans with atopy experience watery eyes, runny nose, and a cough, cats and dogs with atopy experience itchy skin. At-home treatments can include periodic bathing with appropriate shampoos, flea and tick prevention, and OTC anti-histamines. Severe cases can result in skin and ear infections, raw, wet, open wounds (hot spots), and severe discomfort for your pet. If at-home treatments are not giving your pet relief from licking and scratching, please schedule and appointment at the OVC. We have many different treatment options to give your furry friends relief from atopy!
