What the heck is Cushings Disease? Let's learn! The fancy word is hyperadrenocorticism, but the short version is that it is a hormonal imbalance in middle aged to older dogs that is the result of making too much internal steroids.

What causes it? It is caused by either a tiny growth on the pituitary gland in the brain or a growth on the adrenal gland in the abdomen.

What would I see at home? One of the most common signs is increased thirst and urination, but you may also notice a thinning hair coat, pot-belly appearance, or increased appetite.

How is it diagnosed? Screening tests such a basic blood panel and urinalysis often show clues that make us suspicious, but further testing is needed to confirm. This may include an abdominal ultrasound and special test called a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test that checks cortisol responses over 8 hours.

Can it be treated? Yes! There is medication available that is taken lifelong to control steroid levels. In special cases, surgery may be indicated.

We often recommend a blood panel with your dog or cat's annual visit, but why?

🍂 In many animals, we are getting a baseline. If your pet gets sick, we can go back and compare to their "normals" and get a clearer picture of what is happening.

🍂 These panels can screen for and catch disease processes early. We are looking at a variety of things, including kidney function, liver enzymes, blood sugar, and red blood cell levels. Also, in dogs, we are screening for common tick-borne diseases that might become a problem.

🍂 When caught early, we often can do a lot more for many diseases that isn't an option when the pet is already sick. For example, finding out your cat has stage 2 kidney disease means we can prolong their life with appropriate changes. When diagnosed later, such as stage 4, our options to prolong life are much more limited.

🍂 Cats will often include a thyroid check as well. Middle aged to older kitties can develop high thyroid levels that require life-long treatment.

It probably feels like we are constantly reminding you to bring along a p**p sample for your pet's appointment...but we promise it's for a good reason! No one likes the idea of worms living inside your pet, but many of them are actually transmissable to people. 🤢

While it seems like you would see worms in your pet's stool, that's rarely the case. We need to do a careful check under the microscope to look for intestinal parasite eggs. Additionally, our lab also does an antigen check that is even more thorough. Fortunately deworming is usually very routine!

Who needs a f***l check? All puppies and kittens should be checked at least twice during their initial vaccine series and adult animals annually.

"I have always found the sciences to be interesting, and helping out the furry four legged family members who cannot talk has been my passion. It is such a rewarding feeling to help keep animals healthy, or to help them bounce back to normalcy. I've had a fascination with dermatology, and I enjoy the challenges of a complicated case. We have had a significant amount of allergy cases this summer, and it has been so nice to be able to relieve their skin and ears!" --Dr. Germany

One of the most common injuries that we see in our dog patients is CRANIAL CRUCIATE LIGAMENT DISEASE (often just called CCL). We see this most commonly in large breed, middle-aged, overweight dogs, but it can happen to any dog. It is a rupture of one of the main ligaments that hold the knee stable. Often dogs will present to our veterinarians suddenly holding up a back leg.

What causes it? It is thought to be primarily a degenerative condition that happens slowly over time (kind of like a cable slowly unwinding) rather than an acute injury. It can occasionally be due to an acute injury in sporting events.

How is it treated? It many cases, we recommend surgery to help stabilize the knee. In some cases, we can utilize medical management, which includes pain control, weight loss, and joint supplements.

At least 50% of dogs that have the injury will also have their other knee affected within their life. It is important to maintain a lean body weight and a regular exercise schedule to keep your dog as healthy as possible!
