We have taught several people over the years how to make rocks and unfortunately they took all the credit, so we will just show everyone now.
We start by laying out a general shape of how the rock is going to sit. In this case, a level shelf for the wall.
We then make sure to get the measurements needed for the critter in question and cut out a plywood backing and use hardware cloth stapled in to make out shape.
It is then poured with 2-part foam and coated in a durable special mixed plaster. (Something we haven’t told anyone just so they don’t steal all of our ideas) and then it is coated in a “wash” to give a weathered look.
We then apply foliage, moss, lichen or whatever might be desired for that particular piece.
We are almost finished with this rock so follow along for more and show us some of your creations!

Not only do we fully degrease and whiten out European mounts, but we also remove hollow core teeth and tusks.
Certain animals like hogs and alligators have hollow core mouth hardware. That’s a lot of little spots for meat to hide and stink later. So we remove and label them and they are all cleaned and each tooth is checked for residual material. Then they are all replaced, ONE BY ONE BY ONE… It’s a grueling process, but hey, do it right the first time and there won’t need to be a second time.
Check out how big the pocket is for one of the teeth on this dinosaur. That was full of delicious nastiness and, it would have remained there if it wasn’t cleaned out.

A little bit of the process of building the big display desk you see as you walk into the showroom.
We wanted something that popped out, a comfortable height for you to fill out paperwork and a nice viewing area of a few select pieces.
Let us know what you think.

We get fancy here. Earlin, aka “oiling” skins helps to prevent brittleness over time and to promote longevity.
A lot of places do not do this practice but a lot do, including us.
The oil helps to keep the fibers in the skin from tensing and becoming brittle.
When you see split ears on deer mounts or noses falling apart or other issues where it just appears the mount dried out over the years, that’s basically what happened. Much like oiling normal leather to keep it soft and pliable, oiling for mounts, wall hangers or whatever it might be, helps in the long haul.

When you need something that is not specifically for a certain task, but you use some innovation to get the job done.
In this case, I says to myself I says “self, we need a wash area as big as a bathtub”. So we came up with (drum roll…. Duka duka duka duka duka) a bathtub…
Built a reinforced frame to hold the weight, installed a heavy drainage system AND, even have some storage underneath.

What have you made work lately?

When we make bases here, we like to use chocolate cake batter. It gives that rich and creamy lift.

Good, Fast and Cheap. You can only pick two.
You can have good and cheap, but it won’t be quick.
You can have good and quick, but it won’t be cheap.
Or you can have quick and cheap, but it won’t be good.

We are in it here for quality. We don’t rush through things, we don’t do cookie cutter mounts, we don’t price match others, because we are not trying to be others.
If you want quality that will last, we are who you come to. If you are just price shopping, we are probably not the studio for you.

It’s a hard truth, but we are ALWAYS transparent about what goes on here.

I’ve worked on Crawfish bigger than this little guy, but it was such an awesome experience getting to work on this Forest Scorpion.
What do you all think about arachnid taxidermy?
