Every year during Veterinary Technician appreciation week, I’m reminded of how grateful and blessed I am to be working alongside such a strong, intelligent, caring team of women who have dedicated their lives to taking care of not only pets, but the people who love them. Their combined fifty-nine years of dedication and experience in our clinic is a testament to what they give every day to each one of our clients and patients, and I hope you’ll stand alongside me every day in honoring the hard work they put in to making sure you and your pets are always well cared for.

My receptionist walked to the back of the clinic today in tears. “Too many feelings,” she said, trying to get herself under control. First, a client called yelling at her over the phone for something that was completely out of her control; this happens multiple times a day. Then, another client became belligerent and stormed out of the front door, refusing to pay, followed by another kind and generous client who stepped in and paid the bill for the previous client. This in the span of maybe 8 to 10 minutes. We are constantly having to field the overflow of anger and emotion from people who are unable to control themselves, and it’s taking a huge toll on not only my staff, but the veterinary profession at large. Society in general has decided that it’s OK to take their frustrations out on anyone in a service profession, and it’s coming to a head very quickly, especially since COVID. The next time you decide that you want to take your anger out on someone who has absolutely nothing to do with it, think twice, because the person you harm may actually be at the literal end of their rope.

We see ticks on pets all twelve months of the year; there is _no_ break in the winter no matter how cold it gets. Protecting your pets AND your family has become critical. Lyme disease kills.

WV VECTORBORNE DISEASE SURVEILLANCE REPORT
January 1-August 27, 2026

HUMAN SURVEILLANCE – TICKBORNE DISEASE
Through August 27, 2026, 2854 confirmed and probable cases of tickborne diseases (TBDs) were reported in West Virginia. The majority of cases (89.4%) were Lyme disease cases (n=2552). Several other tickborne diseases (TBD) were also reported including Alpha-Gal Syndrome, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis. All of West Virginia’s 55 counties have reported human TBD activity. The Alpha-gal Syndrome numbers here only reflect Confirmed and Probable cases while the OEPS Dashboard numbers include Confirmed, Probable and Suspect for Alpha-gal Syndrome.

West Virginia is in the highest category for emergency room visits, and yet I still have clients who refuse to use flea and tick protection on their animals. If I could stress nothing else this year to protect your family, it’s to do something to protect yourselves against ticks.

Incident rates have been highest in the Northeast — from Maine south through West Virginia and Virginia.
