This week was full of all kind of creatures and one of the smallest one was found in the middle of a highway. The injury had severed the lower limb and completely exposed the bone. We performed a hind limb amputation, and at not even 2 pounds this sweet kitten will grow up not knowing any different life then as a tripod. Thank you to the Kight family for opening your heart and home to this sweet baby.

Veterinarians generally recommend amputation as a last resort when reconstructive surgery, splinting, or medical management cannot save the limb or relieve chronic suffering. The most common indications include:Cancer: Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) is the most frequent cause, particularly in large-breed dogs.
Severe Trauma: Car accidents, animal attacks, or falls that result in shattered bones, severed nerves, or massive soft-tissue loss that cannot be repaired.
Chronic Infections & Deformities: Non-healing wounds, severe joint infections, or congenital birth defects that render the limb non-functional or painful.

Today we treated: Impaction colic in a gorgeous Appaloosa stud, injected joints in performance horses including in one wonderful babysitter- teaching -your -children and taking -care -of -business mare, pre-purchased the newest project, worked on switching tails, treated the ugly run thru the fence and taking down the t-post injury, … not to forget yesterday’s impaled my flank on the t-post mare….spayed and spayed again, performed an abdominal tap in our avian client, past urinary catheters in tom cats, radiographed the collapsing tracheas, hit-by cars and arthritic children….sutured and re-sutured, welcomed new kittens and puppies. How was your Thursday? .. and yes all these babies are doing well… don’t let scary beginnings hold you back from trying.

It's MYTHBUSTER time! 🔎

The core vaccinations for every horse, regardless of their travel status, include Rabies, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), and Tetanus.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes, bacteria, and rabid animals do not discriminate when it comes to infecting horses. Whether a horse is in a freshly bedded stall, wide open pasture, or on show grounds, mosquitoes can potentially infect your horse with life threatening diseases such as EEE, WEE, and/or WNV.

Tetanus is a common clostridial bacteria present in the dirt and can infect a horse who has never left its home just the same as a horse who shows every weekend if it doesn't have proper vaccine status.

Rabies is a 100% fatal disease once clinical signs are present and is easily transmissible to humans and other animals both at home and on the trails.

It's also important to note that different regions in the U.S. may have additional "core" recommendations so be sure to ask your veterinarian what is best for your horse!

Want to learn more about vaccinations? Visit our vaccination chart on our website here: https://aaep.org/resource/adult-horse-vaccination-chart/

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information!
