Time for an update on Lady Liberty and her seven little chocolate nuggets. ❤️ And somehow, for once, we have mostly GOOD news to share.
First things first… LOOK AT THEM. 🥹❤️ These little nuggets have changed so much in a week it's ridiculous. They're eating like they've never seen food before, waddling around everywhere, starting to play, finding their voices and becoming more puppy-like by the day. I still can't believe these are the same tiny babies that were living underneath an abandoned house just a week ago.
And Liberty? She's doing great. ❤️ She's sweet as can be, absolutely beautiful and such a good girl. She's also very much a Husky and has plenty of opinions about being contained, but considering where she was living a week ago, I think she's allowed to have a few complaints. 😂 She's safe, she's getting spoiled, she's taking amazing care of her babies, and it's been pretty incredible watching her settle in and realize she doesn't have to fend for herself anymore.
We also finally got some answers about all of those weird wounds we were seeing on momma and the babies. Staph infection. All eight of them. 😭 Thankfully, on Monday they were seen by the vet, treatment has been started, and everybody is otherwise doing really well. They're eating, getting stronger and becoming more active every single day. We've still got some healing to do, but at least now we know what we're dealing with and we're headed in the right direction.
Now for the REALLY big news. ❤️
When we originally made their post we said we were still very much open to another licensed rescue stepping up if someone had the room and resources for an entire momma and seven very young puppies. Because while we made room for them here, the truth is that room didn't magically appear. We just did what we always seem to do around here and said, Well s**t. We'll figure it out.
And you guys helped us figure it out.
Healing Hearts Rescue in Minnesota reached out, and tomorrow evening Lady Liberty and ALL SEVEN of her babies will be heading to Minnesota. 🥹❤️
They're going together. Momma gets to stay with her babies while they're still this young, their treatment and medical care will continue, and this entire little family gets to move on to the next part of their story together. I cannot even begin to explain the relief that comes with knowing exactly where they're going and knowing someone else is ready and able to take the baton from here.
But before they leave, I really need to talk about something else because you guys showed up BIG for these eight.
We asked for towels, blankets, wet food, puppy supplies and help with their veterinary care, and things started showing up almost immediately. Some of you donated money. Some sent supplies. Some shared their story. Some did all of the above. And holy cow have we needed it. Seven parasite-loaded babies can go through towels and blankets faster than I ever thought possible, especially when anything heavily soiled or contaminated goes straight into the trash instead of through our laundry. 😅
And I don't ever want anybody thinking that because they're transferring after only being here a little over a week, that help wasn't needed or didn't matter.
When I loaded eight unexpected dogs into my vehicle last Thursday, I had absolutely no idea there would be a Minnesota rescue waiting for them a week later. I knew there was a momma and seven 3–4 week old babies living underneath an abandoned house. I knew people were publicly asking for their exact location because they wanted to go get themselves a puppy. And I knew we couldn't leave them there.
That was pretty much the entire plan. 😂 Everything after that was figure it out as we go.
And because you guys helped us, we were able to figure it out. Those donations fed them. Those towels and blankets gave seven little babies somewhere clean, warm and soft to sleep. The supplies helped us keep seven flea-covered, parasite-loaded, staph-infected little nuggets clean and comfortable while they started healing. Your donations helped us get them medical care. Most importantly, your help gave us the ability to say YES when eight dogs needed somewhere safe to go right then, even though we absolutely did not have the room, resources or energy for eight more dogs.
So please don't think for one second that your help wasn't needed because they're leaving. Your help is part of the reason they're able to leave better than they arrived. ❤️ Everything that was sent for this family did exactly what it was supposed to do... it helped us take care of dogs who desperately needed somebody.
And when you really think about everything that has happened in less than two weeks, it's kind of crazy.
One woman noticed a hungry little Husky coming around looking for food. Valerie fed her and cared enough to follow her. Liberty led her underneath an abandoned house where seven tiny babies were found. Valerie worked her butt off getting every last one of them out. They came to Ludo's world. You guys helped us take care of them. Our vet figured out what was going on with their skin and got treatment started. And now another rescue is stepping up and saying, “We've got them from here.” ❤️
THAT is how rescue is supposed to work. Not one rescue drowning while everybody else looks the other way. Not seven 3–4 week old puppies being handed out to whoever could crawl underneath a house fast enough. Just people helping people help dogs.
Tomorrow is going to be bittersweet because apparently I'm perfectly capable of becoming attached to eight dogs in approximately 14 minutes. 😂 But this is a good goodbye.
Lady Liberty and her babies didn't need us forever.
They just needed us when nobody else was coming.
And we came. Then all of you came right behind us. ❤️
Thanks to every single person who donated, sent supplies, shared their story, offered advice, checked on them or helped us in any way over this past week. Tomorrow evening, all eight will leave Missouri together.... safe, fed, flea-free, worm-free, receiving treatment and headed toward people who are ready to take it from here. A HUGE thank you to Healing Hearts Rescue in Minnesota and the angels who will be helping with transport. ❤️
A week ago, they were underneath an abandoned, falling-down house.
Tomorrow, they're headed to Minnesota to an actual foster home with a whole family. ❤️
Not too shabby, Lady Liberty. Not too shabby at all.
Go show Minnesota what Ludo's little chocolate nuggets are made of. ❤️🐾
