Is you dog anxious?
Panting is one sign that a dog is fearful. Fearful dogs may show an avoidance of eye contact, lowered ears and head, and the whites of their eyes ... all classic signs of a worried dog.
Don't forget that when pets cannot escape a fearful situation, they may freeze or they may fight. This, in many cases, is a perfectly normal adaptive response. Sadly, when pets in the veterinary clinic or at the groomer choose to freeze and tolerate handling, we often forget the fact that they are frightened - not relaxed and comfortable!

Is you pet stressed at the vet?

For far too long, veterinarians and many pet owners have accepted the fact that a certain amount of fear displayed by pets in the veterinary clinic is "normal."
By doing this, we have all neglected the potentially serious mental damage that we may have been inflicting upon our pets.

Zoo staff have progressively moved to less physical or chemical restraint and more training, helping their patients to participate in their own medical care. If a 400-lb lion can be taught to present its tail for a blood draw we should be able to help our dogs and cats handle vaccines and blood draws with less stress too.

The first step is recognizing that your pet has Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) signs at the vet office or at the groomer. Test yourself on this photo - have you seen these signs in your dog?

Itchy dogs are more irritable and have an increased likelihood of a bite/ snap.

Does it feel itchy? Red feet? Repeated ear infections?
Allergies (atopic dermatitis is one sign) are no fun for anyone! Itchy skin, red feet, repeated ear infections are all common signs of allergies in dogs. If your dog is suddenly more irritable - make sure you check for allergies.

Getting close to back to school time!
What are your plans for dog training? Finding structured, positive experiences for your dog, especially your young dog is critical for long term behavioral health. Look for trainers that are involved in continuing education, have knowledge assessed certifications and use positive methodology.
