Marin County, the most important Amanita intoxication in dogs is from the death cap mushroom, Amanita phalloides. These mushrooms are well established throughout Northern California, including Marin, and are commonly found around oak trees during wet seasons. Marin animal welfare and public health organizations specifically warn dog owners about death caps and the related destroying angel mushroom.

Clinical course in dogs

Amanita (amatoxin) poisoning typically follows a characteristic pattern:

1. Latent phase (6–24 hours)
* Dog appears normal despite ingestion.
2. Gastrointestinal phase (6–24 hours after ingestion)
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
* Abdominal pain

If you see mushrooms on the trail or outdoors. Please don’t let the pets explore or swallow. If any GI signs follow mushroom ingestion or if you suspect mushroom ingestion, please contact us immediately
Hope all pets stay safe
