If your dog melts into your hand during an ear rub, there's a reason for it.
A dog's ears are full of nerve endings, and slow, gentle touch can feel deeply relaxing. Research on dog-human interaction has found that calm petting can raise oxytocin levels in both dogs and people, the hormone linked to bonding and trust.
Ear rubs also give you a regular chance to notice what's normal for your dog. Floppy-eared breeds are more prone to ear infections, so watch for redness, a bad smell, dark discharge, or frequent head shaking.
If a dog who usually loves ear rubs suddenly pulls away or yelps, it may be sore rather than unfriendly. That's worth a vet check.
