Safehaven Small Breed Rescue We are a 501c3, not for profit, no kill rescue specializing in senior dogs and those born with defects, providing veterinary care - socialization
(232)

Occasionally you may see a post stating that we have reached our limit temporarily - This means that we are currently housing 12 rescue dogs. This is our personal limit, the number we can comfortably care for, feed and keep groomed without stretching ourselves too thin. However, we will make exceptions for true emergencies such as an injured or abuse cases which are usually referred to us by the

local or State Police. Since we refuse to put elderly, handicapped, puppy mill dogs, or abused dogs on a concrete floor, in individual fenced runs. We believe that it is better to make the worst case dogs feel like they really are home, than to take in many dogs only to have them put in a kennel run, isolated and in most cases, in the same situation they were rescued from. Our operating budget usually consists of what ever is left of our personal income after the bills are paid. We attend several craft shows and other fundraisers a year, all of which directly benefit the dogs at Safehaven. At no time do we use donated funds to pay the bills, or for "administrative fees" as other rescues and shelters do. Your donations go to buy the best dog food we can afford, new toys, treats, flea products, heartworm preventative medications, occasionally beds, and snuggle blankets and sweaters for the elderly dogs for winter. You can be assured, that your donation is NOT going into someone's pocket (unless maybe Petsmart's) We receive no state or federal funding for our rescue work. Monetary donations to help cover their expenses can be sent through Paypal at [email protected] or mailed directly to 162 Saxton Avenue, Norway SC 29113. It’s Daisy’s Gotcha Day!

Just one short year ago, Daisy hopped into our beloved Mama’s van and her eyes said “take me home, please!” Mama obliged, and after an exhaustive search when no owner could be found, Daisy officially became a Safehaven Senior.

At 11+ years old, Daisy is nothing but a sweetheart. Over the last year, she has lost 2 more of her (very few) teeth, so her favorite treats now are Steak Grillers instead of Milk Bones. She loves all the littles, but she will admit the two she fancies most are Abner and Manny.

If you visit SSBR, you find Daisy wherever you find Mama in the house. At nighttime, she enjoys sleeping on the new bed that she received as a Christmas present last year (thank you to the special follower who sent her the bed!)
Please join us in celebrating sweet Daisy’s “Happy Gotcha Day!”

Poor ol' Daisy is miserable today. Its been in the 90s and she has an ear infection. I've already started the Easotik meds which should give her some relief. I just feel so bad for her. Hot weather always makes an earache feel worse :(

Happy 10th birthday to "Good Boy" Karma! Karma is not actually one of the SSBR pups, but he is an important member of the SSBR household! Karma is Mama’s personal poodle who loves all the little pups and protects the whole family! Truly, there isn’t a negative thing to be said about this sweet boy. So, join us in wishing him a wonderful 10th birthday, please! 🎉🎉🎉

Since I believe Abner will become the face of Safehaven in the future (Calvin still holds that title) I decided to give him his own page. I'll be chronicling all of his accomplishments and adventures there.

Hi friends! Now that it’s May, it’s time to introduce our May Magnet of the Month pup, Miss Daisy! Daisy was found last summer wandering on a 4-lane highway by our fearless leader, Miss Teri. Worried that Daisy would be hit, Teri stopped to coax her to the side of the road, where she would be safer than the middle of the highway. A beautiful yellow lab, Daisy decided that Teri’s van seat looked like an even safer place to land, and she hopped into the van like she always belonged there.

Daisy is heartworm positive, estimated age is something over 10 yrs old. She’s receiving heartworm treatment. Despite that, she is an absolute doll! Gentle and loving to all the littles, never gives “Mama” any trouble…we hope she’s with us for many years to come!

This magnet fundraiser will continue through all of 2026 and we thank everyone who has already bought magnets and everyone who will buy them to support us. You can get Daisy’s magnet for $6, or you can get the second three (Daisy, Greyson and Louie) for $16. The PayPal links below will get you to the order page and you can use a credit card instead of a PayPal account if you so choose.

Thank you so much for your continued support of Safehaven Small Breed Rescue!

Abner is a typical puppy. Tonight I gave him the last of his Edible Bones, and put the package in my little waste can by my desk. He happily took his bone and promptly hid it on the big bed under my pillow. I assumed he would go back for it like he usually does. I finished the emails and heard him chewing on something. I thought it was the bone. How wrong I was. The bone is still under my pillow, but he got the package out of the waste can and is having a great time destroying it. Whatever makes him happy! 😆

I spoke to Dr. Wolff this morning regarding Abner's elbow issue. The final report from the CT is in:

The radiologist diagnosed Abner with a chronic right distal humeral physeal (growth plate) fracture with severe displacement. This indicates that Abner sustained trauma to this limb at an early age and the fracture occurred through the growth plate resulting in abnormal bone growth of the distal humerus at this site. Unfortunately, the result of this injury lead to abnormal development of his bone in this region as well as persistent instability and consequently chronic disuse of the forelimb. Given Abner's very small size and young age, his bone quality is relatively poor and our ability to securely place implants in the humerus remains a significant impediment to surgical treatment of his chronic fracture non-union. I have consulted with several orthopedic surgeons and the general consensus has been against recommending fracture repair or elbow arthrodesis for Abner's condition. Given that his condition is not causing him pain and he seems to derive some practical benefit from the limb (balance, object manipulation), Abner may be able to live a relatively normal life with this injury, albeit with some difficulty ambulating on the injured limb. If, in the future, the injured limb begins to cause Abner pain (thought unlikely) or his limb becomes more of an impediment to his movement rather than an asset, forelimb amputation could be considered, however I would not recommend this procedure at this time, either. Despite having this chronic injury, Abner seems to be an otherwise happy, healthy puppy. Lastly, an elbow brace, which we discussed over the phone, MAY provide improved function and mobility for Abner and could be worth trying.

So thats the scoop. I will be working on finding a brace for Abner's elbow this weekend.
