In the daily Adventures of Veterinary Medicine, you never know what you’ll find….

This dear horse is new to the client. She purchased her only a few months ago. We arrived to perform Dental Exams and Floats on several horses. Her owner mentioned she was being difficult under saddle and not wanting to go forward. Wanting to eat hay more than her grain. Could they be correlated?

Just when I say, maybe… but that behavior is rarely temperament and very often something is wrong. We start talking about Dr. Dyson’s paper regarding physical cues of discomfort….

I pop open her mouth to find THIS! A STICK wedge between her upper teeth.

It was very well embedded into the top of her mouth. Having left a wound when I removed it. It has been there a while… no way of telling exactly how long.

Her reaction after removal lasted several minutes, plenty long for me to take a video.

🤷🏼‍♀️ Horses 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you are looking for a veterinarian to help you manage the daily adventures of homicide or su***de choices of horses, we are here for it. Of course with some extra spice, s***k and a few cuss words.

And some dentistry too.

Here I am again, trying to be a person.

I am headed to Hinkley for a 2 day clinic. Between my Morel Lavallee injury, a hairline fracture to my tibia, and spring season… my riding hasn’t been very consistent. Or good for that matter.

But I try anyways.

I am riding at 1 pm on Saturday, and 1145 on Sunday. I will likely leave my phone in my trunk during those times.

If an emergency arrises, or even concerns arise, please let me know early if able. So I can make plans to track back across the call range.

I should have some quiet time to catch up on notes.

Being an Equine Veterinarian is hard. Trying to still be an equestrian while being an equine vet is a completely different challenge. I was once told I would never find the time to ride or at least ride well by a treasured colleague.

I may not ride well, but I like proving her wrong. I am still at least trying to do both. ☺️

Thankful for the very special breed of horses who seem to take the inconsistent, and significant poor riding in stride.

Why a living example of your blood, sweat, tears and exhaustion once again does not understand why his mother is the center of your attention. Instead of him.

Don’t worry, I still made out with my boy. But a little reminder.

You cannot bake a bun if the oven isn’t fully serviced. At least not well.

Broodmares need vaccines, dental floats, farrier visits and good nutrition. Healthy foals do not come from poorly managed mothers.

Take excellent care of your broodmares. (Dammit, take care of all mothers, no matter the species. 😊☺️)

I may not commit to making these tiny creatures. Mostly due to sleep exhaustion restraints, a once dislocated shoulder and sleep medications making driving at 2 am for dystopias nearly impossible…. But I am damn good at keeping the oven at tip top shape. Even when it try’s to kill itself. 😅

💚💙Take care of the next generation, but taking care of the current. 💚💙

Whether you like it or not, life will always be a popularity contest. Especially when you are a Veterinarian.

Coming in to my 15th year of practice and 24th year of being in the industry it took me this long to see it clearly.

Things I have learned along the way.

*Try to guard your feelings. Other’s opinions of you aren’t important. Clients will use your services and then hang you out to dry, all along acting like you ever existed. This is a them problem, not a You problem.

*Do not allow the value others find in you to be the value you put into your self. These are not correlated. They are not equal.

*Generics are never as good as the original. (I can literally make a list. Not as affective, no safety trials. Cheaper isn’t always better.) Be your authentic self. Practice authenticity. Find your niche. Let your people find you. Being Fake takes up a lot of energy.

*Root yourself deeply with your colleagues. They often help you find the truth. And clients who lie to your face.

*Also pay attention when colleagues you admire and know their standard of medicine leave a standing job offer on the table.. for years. Just in case you decide you ever want to move out of Ohio. They want the first phone call.

*Do not put more into someone than they put into you. You do not have to bend over backwards for everyone.

*Your people will find you. Leave your work standing with them.

*The rest can go kick rocks.

*Trust your gut when your hackles go up. For me… it has never been wrong. Don’t get offended when those who aren’t your people show their true colors. Mentally jot down the names… and keep moving forward.

More work today on ponies, and clients I adore. Stay true to yourself.

💙💚Colleagues, I got you. 💚💙

From Monday to Sunday of last week we preformed;

*3 wellness appointments
*9 lameness exams +/- radiographs, ultrasounds, regional limb blocks, injections
*5 equine dentals +/- dental endoscopy’s
*2 emergencies or emergency recheck exams
*10 chiropractic evaluations

Needless to say… it has been a busy week! I am caught up on invoicing but working on medical exams. I had built a little “me” time in the schedule over the next 2 weeks. I will be doing my best to catch up. But sometimes I do make my mental health and rest more of a priority than paperwork.

The things I prefer to be doing than paperwork…

God always gives me a beautiful sky when he sends me out late to take care of his creatures. 💚

Happy Monday-ist Tuesday.

We wanted to take a moment to recognize our members. Two of our members have sponsored the Flight for Independence I. In addition to the VCS sponsoring the lunch for this event, Dr. Ronie Meer from High Water Veterinary Service and Jill Ekis with stepped up to sponsor, 50/50, the Flight for Independence I dressage show. Closing date for this event is May 30.

Dr. Veronica Meer High Water Veterinary Services is based in Norwalk OH but travels to Western PA to service several barns in our area. Her clients will tell you, she is an extraordinarily talented performance vet. Her ability to assess and treat lameness and performance related issues, are second to none. We are grateful to have her expertise not only for our horses but for fact based corrections regarding online misinformation. We appreciate her support of the VCS.

On the Verge Designs was started by Jill Ekis. It began as a shop, with fashion forward accessories designs and has now grown into competition wear boutique . She wanted to make people feel good about how they present themselves and to be able to express their own unique style. When you feel good in your clothes , you carry that confidence with you. We can all use an extra boast of confidence from time to time. 👑 She also wanted to make sure that you also felt you received something special, that is well made with high attention to detail. Something is uniquely you.

Both of these individuals realize the importance of local communities supporting the efforts of those wanting to bring more dressage to the area. We recognize the importance of letting these businesses know how much they are appreciated and needed, to do this growth. Thank you!
