🐶 BRINGING HOME A NEW PUPPY? DON'T GIVE THEM THE WHOLE HOUSE!

One of the easiest mistakes to make with a new puppy is giving them too much freedom too soon.

Your puppy doesn't need to explore the entire house on the first day.

Start small.

🐾 Use a puppy pen.

🐾 Use baby gates and closed doors.

🐾 Keep your puppy where you can supervise them.

🐾 Have the crate nearby for quiet time and naps.

🐾 Keep toys and appropriate things to chew within easy reach.

🐾 Take your puppy to their potty area on a regular schedule.

As your puppy learns the rules of your home and becomes more reliable, you can gradually give them more freedom.

Too much freedom too soon can lead to potty accidents, chewing, puppy biting and behaviors you don't want your puppy practicing.

A smaller, well-managed area also makes it much easier for you to notice when your puppy needs to potty, needs a nap, or is getting into something they shouldn't.

Your puppy has plenty of time to explore the rest of the house.

Start small. Supervise. Teach good habits. Then gradually increase freedom. ❤️🐾

🐾 TAKE YOUR DOG ON A SNIFFIWALK!

A SniffiWalk is a wonderful way for your dog to sniff and explore and simply enjoy their walk. 🐶👃

Give your dog some slack on the leash, don't hold them tight, don't keep them close to you and let them investigate the world around them.

Let them walk ahead of you. Sniff the grass, the road, the bushes and all those interesting smells along the way.

If your dog wants to stop and investigate something — stop with them.

There's no hurry. It may take you 10 minutes to get down a block.

Sniffing gives your dog a chance to use their nose and their brain while enjoying some physical exercise at the same time.

You may find your dog doesn't even want to pull. They're too busy sniffing and investigating everything around them!

Don't worry about how far you go.

Let your dog explore. Let them sniff. Let them enjoy their walk. ❤️

By the time you get home, your dog will be so satisfied and be ready to curl up and take a nice nap.

🐶 STOP PUPPY BITING — WHEN NOTHING ELSE WORKS

You've tried saying “Ouch.”

You've tried standing still.

You've given your puppy a toy.

You've walked away.

You've tried redirecting.

And your puppy is still biting your hands, clothes, ankles and feet.

So what do you do when nothing seems to work?

First, understand something important:

Puppy mouthing is normal behavior—but that doesn't mean you simply have to live with painful puppy biting.

Your puppy needs to learn what is acceptable to put their mouth on and how to interact with people without biting.

🐾 Don't wait until your puppy is completely out of control.
Watch for the times biting is most likely to happen—during exciting play, when your puppy is overtired, or when there's lots of movement.

🐾 Manage the environment.
Use puppy pens, baby gates, crates and supervision to prevent your puppy from constantly practicing biting behavior.

🐾 Teach your puppy what TO do.
Have appropriate toys and chews available and reward calm interaction.

🐾 Be consistent.
Everyone in the family should respond to puppy biting in the same way. If biting sometimes starts a game and sometimes ends the interaction, learning becomes much harder.

🐾 Remember that an overtired puppy can become a very bitey puppy.
Sometimes your puppy doesn't need more exercise or play. Your puppy needs a chance to settle down and rest.

After more than 40 years of training puppies, I know how frustrating puppy biting can be—especially when you feel as though you've already tried everything.

🐾 WHY POTTY PAD TRAINING CAN BE A GREAT CHOICE

Potty pad training isn't just for puppies.

I've owned Italian Greyhounds for more than 40 years, and potty pads have always been part of life with my dogs.

There are many reasons someone may choose potty pads:

🐶 Bad weather — rain, snow, extreme cold or heat can make outdoor potty trips difficult.

🐶 Small dogs — little dogs can be especially uncomfortable going outside in bad weather.

🐶 Nighttime — your dog has a safe potty option without having to go outside in the middle of the night.

🐶 Apartment or condo living — getting outside quickly isn't always possible.

🐶 Young puppies — pads can be useful while you're following your veterinarian's recommendations about when and where an incompletely vaccinated puppy can safely go outside.

🐶 Busy schedules — your dog has another appropriate place to potty when getting outside isn't practical.

🐶 Older dogs — having an indoor potty option can make things easier as dogs age.

And some people simply prefer potty pad training.

It's your choice. What matters is teaching your dog clearly and consistently where you want them to go.

🐾 AND THEN I FOUND A POTTY PAD I REALLY LIKED

For years I used regular white disposable potty pads. My dogs would p*e on one, then look at me as if to say:

“Are you going to change that?” 😂

They didn't want to step back onto an area that already felt wet.

Then I tried HoneyCare Carbon Training Pads.

When I first opened them and saw that dark gray/black surface, I wasn't sure I was going to like them at all.

I changed my mind very quickly.

The carbon pads absorb the urine so well that my dogs are much more willing to use the same pad again.

Instead of a pad being used once and immediately needing to be replaced, my dogs may use a carbon pad several times before I need to change it.

In my experience, I was using about one-third the number of pads I had been using with the regular white pads.

🐾 REACTIVE DOG BARKING — DISTANCE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Does your dog bark, lunge, or become overexcited when another dog appears on your walk?

One of the most important things I teach owners of reactive dogs is:

You don't have to wait for your dog to react before you do something.

Watch your surroundings and notice the other dog before your dog becomes overwhelmed.

🐶 Create distance early. Cross the street, turn around, or move farther away.

🐶 Use visual barriers. A parked car, hedge, bushes, or trees can temporarily block your dog's view.

🐶 Don't force your dog to get closer. Training doesn't mean your dog has to walk right past every dog you encounter.

🐶 Find the distance where your dog can notice the other dog without barking or lunging.

🐶 Reward your dog for looking back at you and staying connected with you.

With Beezie, I know the distance where she can look at another dog and then immediately look back at me for her reward.

That's where I want to work—not so close that she's already barking and unable to focus.

Every successful walk begins with a plan before you ever pick up the leash.

🐾 POTTY PAD TRAINING TIP: TOO MUCH FREEDOM TOO SOON

One of the most common potty training mistakes is giving a young puppy too much freedom in the house before they are reliably potty trained.

If your puppy can wander from room to room, it becomes much harder to notice the signals that they need to go—and much easier for them to quietly have an accident somewhere.

While your puppy is learning:

🐶 Supervise closely. Keep your puppy where you can see them.

🐶 Limit your puppy's space. Use a puppy pen, baby gates, closed doors, or a crate when appropriate.

🐶 Keep potty pads in consistent locations. You can have more than one potty area—for example, upstairs and downstairs—but keep those locations consistent.

🐶 Follow a regular potty schedule. Don't wait for your puppy to make the decision.

🐶 Reward immediately. When your puppy uses the potty pad, let them know right away that they made the right choice.

As your puppy becomes more reliable, you can gradually give them more freedom in your home.

Potty training isn't just about teaching your puppy where to go. It's also about preventing accidents while good habits are developing.

🐶 CHOOSING A KONG FOR YOUR PUPPY OR DOG? SIZE MATTERS!

One of my YouTube videos, Kong Dog Toy Sizes — NEVER Buy This Size, has now been watched more than 91,000 times.

Five years after I published it, people are still finding it—and there's a good reason.

Choosing the wrong size Kong can be a safety issue.

A Kong should never be small enough for your dog to swallow or become lodged in the mouth or throat. And choosing the right Kong isn't only about size.

🐾 Consider your dog's age and size.
🐾 Choose the appropriate texture for your puppy or dog.
🐾 Change the Kong size and texture as your puppy grows.
🐾 Strong chewers may need a Classic or Extreme Kong.
🐾 Regularly inspect your dog's Kong for damage or wear.

A properly chosen Kong can provide enrichment, give your puppy an appropriate outlet for chewing, and become a useful part of everyday life.

🐶 5 THINGS TO HAVE READY BEFORE YOUR NEW PUPPY COMES HOME

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting! A little preparation before that puppy walks through your door can make those first days much easier for everyone.

Here are 5 things I recommend having ready:

🐾 1. A Crate
Choose the correct size and decide ahead of time where your puppy will sleep. Your puppy's crate should become a comfortable, safe place to rest.

🐾 2. A Puppy Pen and Baby Gates
Young puppies should not have complete freedom in the house. A puppy pen, gates, and closed doors help you supervise your puppy, prevent accidents, and keep your puppy safe.

🐾 3. Food, Treats & Feeding Supplies
Find out what your puppy is currently eating before bringing them home. Have food, bowls, and small training treats ready so you aren't shopping for essentials after your puppy arrives.

🐾 4. Safe Chew Toys & a Properly Sized Kong
Puppies need appropriate things to chew. Have several safe toys available and make sure you choose the right size and type of Kong for your puppy.

🐾 5. A Potty Training Plan
Decide ahead of time where you want your puppy to go potty. Will you train outside, use potty pads, or use pads temporarily and transition outside later?

Whatever you choose, start with a plan from the very first day.

🐾 HOW TO POTTY TRAIN YOUR PUPPY OUTSIDE

We want to teach your puppy that outside is the place to go potty.

Success starts with a plan, consistency, supervision, and preventing accidents while your puppy is learning.

🐶 Take your puppy outside on a regular schedule.
🐶 Use the same potty area so your puppy learns to go potty in that spot.
🐶 Supervise closely and limit your puppy's space indoors to help prevent accidents.
🐶 Watch for signs that your puppy needs to go—sniffing the floor, suddenly stopping play, or walking away.
🐶 Reward immediately after your puppy goes potty outside.
🐶 Be patient—your puppy is learning a completely new routine.

One of the biggest mistakes is giving a young puppy too much freedom too soon. Crates, puppy pens, baby gates, closed doors, and supervision can help you manage your puppy's environment while good potty habits are developing.

Yesterday I talked about potty pad training. Some families choose potty pads long-term. Others want their puppy going outside from the beginning.

And for some families, it's a combination of both.

You may choose potty pads when your puppy first comes home and then transition to outside potty training once your puppy is appropriately vaccinated and your veterinarian says it's safe to use outdoor areas. Other families continue using both indoor pads and outside potty areas.

The choice is yours.

What's important is deciding what you want your puppy to learn and then teaching it consistently.
