🐾 STOP LEASH PULLING!

Does your dog pull you down the street when you go for a walk?

A training lead can make it easier to guide your dog, but choosing the right equipment is only part of the solution!

In today's video, I'm demonstrating one of my favorite leashes, the Halti Double-Ended Training Lead.

🐾 IS YOUR DOG'S HARNESS SAFE?

Have you ever bought a harness that looked like a perfect fit, only to discover that it rubbed, twisted, or slipped out of place when your dog started walking?

Not every harness fits every dog!

Some harnesses rub under the front legs. Others sag across the chest. And some may allow a narrow-bodied dog to back out and escape.

My favorite for Nicky and Beezie is the Ruffwear Flagline because of its extra rear strap and secure fit.

But the best harness for my dogs may not be the best harness for yours!

🐶 NO MORE NAIL TRIM FEAR!
Does your puppy pull their feet away when you try to touch their paws?

Have you ever tried to trim your puppy's nails, only to have them struggle, squirm, or become frightened?

Here's something I always taught in my puppy-training classes:
Don't wait until your puppy needs a nail trim to begin teaching them to accept having their feet handled!

I start by sitting comfortably and gently holding my puppy, making sure they're supported and relaxed.

Then I begin touching their feet.
🐾 Touch one paw and give a delicious treat.
🐾 Gently touch each toe and nail, rewarding your puppy.
🐾 Introduce nail clippers by showing them to your puppy and giving a treat.
🐾 Gradually move the clippers closer and eventually touch them to a nail, without cutting.
🐾 If you're planning to use a nail grinder, introduce the equipment and its sound gradually.
And here's the most important part:
❤️ We haven't trimmed a single nail yet!

We're teaching our puppy that having their feet handled, seeing nail clippers, and hearing a grinder all predict wonderful things.

When you take your time and practice these exercises regularly, you're helping your puppy build confidence before their first nail trim.

🐶 DOES YOUR PUPPY CRY WHEN YOU PUT THEM IN THEIR CRATE?

You put your puppy in the crate, close the door, and walk away.

And then it starts...

Whining. Barking. Crying.

Your puppy wants OUT!

But think about this for a minute.

Why would your puppy want to stay in a crate when nobody has taught them that it's a wonderful place to be?

When I teach crate training, I don't begin by closing the crate door.

I begin by teaching the puppy to WANT to go inside!

❤️ Here's how I start:

🐾 Every meal is fed in the crate with the door OPEN.

🐾 I play little games, tossing treats into the crate and allowing the puppy to come and go.

🐾 I give the puppy a stuffed Kong to enjoy while relaxing inside.

🐾 I gradually teach the puppy to stay comfortably in the crate while I sit nearby.

🐾 Only when the puppy is comfortable do I begin introducing movement of the crate door.

And here's something I want every puppy owner to understand:

Never use the crate for punishment, and never leave a frightened puppy screaming in the crate, hoping they'll eventually stop.

Crate training should build confidence and trust.

🐶 HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TAKE MY PUPPY OUTSIDE TO POTTY?

You take your puppy outside.

They run around, sniff the grass, chase a leaf, and have a wonderful time.

You bring them back inside.

They get a drink of water, wander across the kitchen, and suddenly...

There's a puddle on the floor!

Sound familiar?

One of the most important things I teach puppy owners is that going outside to play and going outside to potty are not necessarily the same thing.

And potty training isn't just about taking your puppy outside every hour.

It's about understanding WHEN your puppy is most likely to need to go.

🐾 Immediately after waking up in the morning
🐾 After waking from a nap
🐾 After eating or drinking
🐾 During and after play
🐾 When they suddenly stop playing and begin sniffing the floor
🐾 When they wander away from the area where they've been playing
🐾 Before bedtime

Young puppies may need potty breaks every 30–60 minutes while awake, sometimes even more frequently during active play.

And here's another important point:

Too much freedom and not enough supervision can make potty training much more difficult.

A puppy who can wander into another room may have an accident before you even realize they've disappeared.

Use puppy pens, gates, crates for appropriate rest, and close supervision to help prevent accidents while your puppy is learning.

🐶 WHY DOES MY PUPPY BITE ME MORE THAN EVERYONE ELSE?

Does your puppy bite you constantly but seem to behave differently with other family members?

You feed your puppy, take them outside, play with them, give them attention, and take care of everything they need.

And you're the one getting bitten!

Why?

Puppies learn different behaviors with different people, depending on how each person interacts with them.

🐾 The person who does most of the puppy care

You may be giving your puppy attention every time they approach. Instead, try teaching your puppy to sit before being petted. Encourage other family members to share in feeding, training, and caring for the puppy.

🐾 The person who plays rough

Wrestling with your puppy and encouraging them to grab your hands may seem like fun, but you're teaching your puppy that biting hands is part of the game.

Use a tug toy instead. If your puppy bites your hands, calmly stop playing.

🐾 The child who runs away

A child who is afraid of being bitten may scream, jump, or run away. To the puppy, that movement can look like an exciting game of chase.

With adult supervision, teach children calm, safe ways to interact with the puppy.

🐾 When all the kids are playing

Running, jumping, laughing, and excitement can encourage a puppy to chase and nip.

Use puppy pens or gates when the kids are playing actively, and teach your puppy appropriate games during calmer times.

❤️ Here's what I want you to remember:

Your puppy isn't necessarily biting one person more because they dislike that person.

Look at how each family member interacts with your puppy. Sometimes changing what WE do changes what our puppy does.

🐶 WHAT IS TRIGGERING YOUR PUPPY'S BITING?

Your puppy suddenly starts biting your hands.

Then your ankles.

They're grabbing your clothes, racing around the room and getting harder and harder to control.

It's easy to focus on one thing:

How do I make the biting STOP?

But I want you to ask another question first:

WHY is my puppy biting right now?

Look at what happened before the biting started.

🐾 When did your puppy last have a good, uninterrupted nap?

🐾 Have they had too much play and become overstimulated?

🐾 Or have they not had enough appropriate exercise and activity?

🐾 Do they need to go potty?

🐾 Are they hungry?

🐾 Do they need something appropriate to chew?

🐾 Have they had any mental exercise—training, a puzzle or a snuffle mat?

Sometimes the answer isn't simply “My puppy bites.”

There's a reason the biting suddenly becomes worse at a particular time of day.

For the next few days, become a detective.

Write down what time the worst biting starts and what your puppy was doing before it happened.

You may begin to see a pattern you hadn't noticed before.

And once you discover what is triggering the biting, you can start making changes before your puppy reaches that out-of-control point.

🐶 “BUT MY PUPPY SLEEPS ALL DAY!”

I hear this from puppy owners all the time.

Their puppy is biting hands, grabbing clothes, going after ankles and getting completely out of control—often later in the day.

When I suggest that the puppy may be overtired, they tell me:

“But my puppy sleeps all day!”

But is your puppy really getting the rest they need?

Think about where your puppy sleeps.

Maybe they fall asleep on the kitchen or living room floor.

You walk past—they open an eye.

You get up—they lift their head.

You walk into another room—they get up and follow you.

The kids start playing—they're awake again.

Then they collapse back down until something else happens.

Your puppy may be dozing throughout the day without ever getting enough uninterrupted sleep.

And an overtired puppy doesn't necessarily look tired.

They may:

🐾 Race around the house
🐾 Grab your pants or sleeves
🐾 Bite your hands, feet and ankles
🐾 Jump and zoom around
🐾 Have difficulty settling down
🐾 Seem to get more wound up as the evening goes on

Sometimes we see all that activity and think:

“This puppy needs MORE exercise.”

But adding more play and excitement to an already overtired puppy can make things even harder.

That's one reason I believe scheduled naps and crate training can be so important for puppies. A puppy who is comfortable in their crate has a quiet place where they can close both eyes and get some real, uninterrupted sleep.

And being overtired isn't the only reason biting may suddenly get worse.
