I wish I could say that my journey to become a dog trainer was planned out. It wasn’t. I spent years working in jobs that didn’t fulfill me. And while I gained skills that now help me run a business none of these jobs got me excited to wake up in the morning. I knew I wanted to work with dogs. But I didn’t know the path. I started volunteering with a local dog rescue. And I was told I was a natura

l. I was able to start working in the training aspect. And I was lucky enough to help dogs. I’m talking dogs that were on death row. Dogs that were considered un-adoptable. I apprenticed under some great trainers and eventually worked myself to the point where I was hired on as a full time trainer. The experience formed a huge part of what is the foundation for how I train today. Today I work with a lot of rescues. And I work with a lot of purebreds. And everything in between. And while I realize that not every dog I work with these days is on death row, or in danger of spending his or her entire life in a shelter, I do realize that every client I work with and every dog I meet is in a position needing some help. After all, if you didn’t need help you wouldn’t be on this page today looking for a dog trainer. I like to treat every client, every dog, as if the changes we need to make in the dog’s behavior are of great importance. Because to you and your dog they are. Working for that rescue wasn’t the only foundational piece of my business. It was working there that I met Nicole who was coming to volunteer and help out local dogs. We’ve been together ever since. Our passion for these dogs has formed the foundation for this company and we’re proud to serve the greater Detroit area.

The breed matters! Not because some breed are bad, but because each breed was purposely created to have different traits and characteristics and those traits may or may not fit with your lifestyle.

Do you live in an apartment with lots of neighbors and little outdoor area for your dog to run? If so then a super active breed or a very vocal breed is likely going to cause some friction with your neighbors and with your lifestyle.

Do you have a very social lifestyle where your dog will be exposed to lots of people outside of your immediate family? Then having a dog who was bred to protect livestock or personal protection may not be the best fit as those dogs are often more wary of strangers and can show aggressive behaviors in some scenarios.

Do you live in a super hot climate? If so then breed that were bred to live in cold climates may struggle, or bred with flat faces who have a harder time breathing and handling the heat.

Again there are no ‘bad breeds’ but there are breed that are not a good fit for your specific family and lifestyle. To set yourself and your dog up for the most success, do your research and understanding what kind of dog you’re getting before adding them to your family.

Often times the most useful behaviors are not the super flashy ones. Teaching your dogs to ‘shake’ or ‘play dead’ is a cool party trick but isn’t super useful in day to day life. These are our top overlooked behaviors.

1. Holding a place command instead of begging at the dinner table. We have so many clients who come to us with complaints that their dog begs at the table or steals food from their kids. Using a place command a meal times gives your dog a spot where they should be and keeps them out of dinning area. Meals can once again be calm and enjoyable!

2. Giving space around open doorways instead of rushing out. Another common issue our clients report is their dog rushing out the door when they are trying to bring in groceries or when the kids are coming in and out. Establishing boundaries around your main doorways allows you to come in and out with ease without having to worry about tipping over your dog, your dog jumping up and knocking a kid over, or rushing out the door and running off.

3. Calmly riding in the car and not bouncing around between windows. Having a dog bouncing around your car while driving can be a major hazard. You’re distracted trying to get them to calm down, they start stepping on buttons or reacting at people or cars passing by. It’s a recipe for disaster! Teaching your dog to calmly ride in the car helps eliminate distractions and keeps everyone safer.

Top 3 Favorite Dogs to get in for Training

1. Young Puppies: the nice things about working with young puppies, is for the most part they are a blank slate. There is often no ‘un-doing’ of bad behaviors, and instead we get to focus on just teaching the behaviors we want. Any ‘bad behaviors’ that do exist are typically easier to address since the puppy hasn’t been practicing those behaviors for years like older dogs. It makes our job a bit easier and clients get to save years of frustration and headaches by just investing in training early.

2. Working breeds. Often times people get working breeds and don’t understand what it takes to fulfill their needs which leads to a lot of unwanted behavior and issues. Being able to help educate owners, and help them to find ways to fulfill their dog’s needs and bring peace to their household brings us so much joy!

3. Dogs in need of off leash obedience. We LOVE teaching off leash obedience. So many of our owners want off leash freedoms for their dogs. Wether they live on a few acres of property that they want their dogs to be able to roam, or take frequent family vacations to their lake house where they want Fido to be able to run free, we love helping owners be able to safely and successfully achieve off leash reliability with their dogs.

Fast downs and Implied stays are 2 of the most helpful commands in chaotic situations.

When chaos starts being able to quickly put your dog in a down allows you to jump in and help without adding more chaos of a dog into the situation.

And the implied stay. If you’re constantly having to remind or tell your dog to stay then your focus has to remain on your dog instead of the potentially urgent and chaotic situation that’s unfolding.
