Yellow tail cribos are not your average snake.

These are Drymarchon, the same genus as indigos, and they are in a league of their own.

They do not constrict like a boa or python. They hunt different. They move different. They react different. They overpower prey, grab it, crush it, beat it up, and flat out dominate it.

That is also why people misunderstand them sometimes. They see that crazy feeding response and think the snake is aggressive.

A lot of the time, it is not aggression. It is ridiculous food drive. These animals get locked in, overexcited, and come in hot. They are even known for chasing feeders down, and we have experienced that a time or two in this shop.

Smart, alert, confident, and cut from a different cloth.

This is not just a snake. This is a whole different kind of animal.

Chinese king rat snakes do not stay looking the same forever.

When we first got these guys, they were way darker and more plain-looking. You can still see it in the tail. That tail color is basically what most of the body looked like at first.

Now the front half is starting to change, and that pattern and color is starting to come in.

They are still a little wiry, and I have not been handling them hard. Right now they are mostly being left alone, eating, growing, and settling in. But every now and then I like to pull them out, check them over, and watch that color change happen in real time.

One of them is a little further along, and the other one looks like it is about a shed behind.

That is one of the cool parts about raising snakes like this. You do not just buy the finished product. You get to watch them grow into what they are going to be.

Chinese king rat snakes.

Underrated. Different. And getting better every shed.

Millbrook, Alabama. We’re coming your way next weekend.

Bama Reptiles & Ranch will be set up at the Show Me Reptile Show in Millbrook on Saturday, June 6th, and we’re bringing a serious lineup with us.

Emerald tree boas, green tree pythons, BCI boas, multiple types of pythons, colubrids, lizards, geckos, invertebrates, bioactive cleanup crews, and plenty more will be hitting the table.

On the gecko side, expect to see animals like sarasinorum geckos, leachies, crested geckos, leopard geckos, and more.

We’re not just coming to sell animals. We’re coming ready to talk setups, husbandry, feeders, bioactive builds, enclosure questions, and how to actually keep these animals the right way.

Big shoutout to the Show Me Reptile Show crew for bringing another reptile event to Alabama. Shows like this are good for the hobby, good for keepers, and good for families who want to see what the reptile world is really about.

If you’ve been wanting to check out Bama Reptiles & Ranch without making the drive to Northport, this is your chance. Come meet us, ask questions, check out the animals, and see why so many people are making us their reptile shop.

And if life gets busy and you can’t make the show, or you just don’t want to wait, we’re only about an hour away from the Millbrook area. Our shop is packed with reptiles, feeders, enclosures, supplies, bioactive products, and some of the most diverse reptile inventory you’ll find in Alabama.

Make sure you stop by our tables and say hey.

Turned the volume up and somehow our Sphynx cat went from sweet little shop cat to full jungle predator. 😂

No fur. No shame. Just wrinkles, attitude, and a purr that sounds like a tiny lion trapped in a heated blanket.

This is what customer service looks like at Bama Reptiles & Ranch.

Come for the reptiles. Stay for the weird little shop cat.

Not all tortoises are the same, and this is exactly why we like walking people through the differences before they take one home.

In this video, Sam goes over four common tortoises we carry here at Bama Reptiles & Ranch:

Sulcata Tortoise
The big one. These start off tiny, but they can become backyard animals that may outlive you. Grass-heavy diet, big enclosure needs, serious long-term commitment.

Leopard Tortoise
Similar grassland-style care to sulcatas, but with that incredible shell pattern. Still gets large, still needs space, still not a “small pet,” but absolutely beautiful.

Red Foot Tortoise
A tropical tortoise that stays more manageable and does great with warmth, humidity, greens, some fruit, and occasional protein. These are a great option for people who want personality and color without going sulcata-big.

Hermann’s Tortoise
The smaller option of the group. These are great for someone who wants a tortoise but does not have room for a giant outdoor setup. Still needs proper heat, UVB, calcium, and space to roam, but much more manageable long term.

The biggest thing to remember: don’t buy a tortoise based on baby size. Buy it based on adult size, adult diet, adult enclosure, and adult lifespan.

Sam is definitely our tortoise lady, so if you have questions, drop them in the comments or come see us at the shop.

Little handling session with one of our green tree pythons.

This girl came from Michael Juarez at Trap Talk, and I have to give credit where it’s due. She came in well started, established, eating, shedding clean, and already showing the kind of confidence you hope for in a green tree python.

This is a Manokwari x Biak green tree python, and animals like this are a big part of why I’m getting more and more hooked on chondros. Green trees are a different world. They are not just “green snakes on a stick.” The lineage, the pairing, the bloodline, the way they are raised — all of that matters.

This was not a long handling session. Just a few calm minutes, no pushing her too far, no trying to prove anything. That’s the goal with reptiles like this. Short, positive sessions where the animal does not feel like it has to strike, panic, or defend itself.

I’m still a boa guy at heart, but I’m not going to lie… green tree pythons are coming for that top spot.

We’re building a serious green tree python project here, and the goal is simple: well-started animals, strong lineage, proper care, and snakes we can be proud to put our name behind.

Big shoutout to MJ. And yes, we have another male coming from him that is even more stacked than this girl.

Now I just need to finish selling a kidney so I can pay for him.
