Dr. Meredith Boulay has been an equine veterinarian in eastern Massachusetts for over 15 years. She started Middlesex Equine in December of 2016, and is available for appointments and emergencies. Regular appointments can be scheduled Monday through Friday for lameness evaluations, prepurchase exams, reproductive services, dentistry, and preventative care.

RECALL ALERT: American Regent, Inc. Animal Health is conducting a nationwide recall of two lots (25011 and 3369) of Adequan® Canine Injection (for dogs), 100 mg/mL 5mL multi-dose vials and two lots (24416 and 25265P) of Adequan® i.m. Injection (for horses), 500mg/5 mL single-dose 5mL vials to the consumer level. Time to share this again as we head into a heat wave. Temp+humidity=heat index. Right now it is
86 degrees + 56% humidity = 142 heat index. Going to be much worse in 24 hours!

"HOT" TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER RIDING

As you enjoy some fun in the sun with your favorite equine, make sure you understand how the combination of heat and humidity can take the fun part out the equation — and potentially even turn into a dangerous situation for your horse.

When riding in hot weather, remember to take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and for signs of heat exhaustion, as the situation can quickly escalate into heat stroke. If your horse looks hot and tired, it's time for a drink, a cold bath and a break in the shade.

Japanese yew is one of the most common ornamental plants in the suburban landscape. Once you know what it is, you will see it everywhere. Almost every part of the plant is incredibly toxic to horses; only a small amount is lethal.

The death of a Central Park carriage horse that collapsed last week while on a ride with two passengers was caused by a foreign toxic plant, according to a necropsy publicized by the union representing carriage drivers.

The Transport Workers Union of America said the horse, Deniz, was giving a ride near East 90th Street in Manhattan on June 9 when it paused to eat a shrub along the curb.

A short time later, the 16-year-old horse collapsed and died, according to the necropsy performed by Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the union said.
