🐾 Meet Sabrina! 🐾
Sabrina is a 3-year-old Siamese who presented with lethargy, vomiting, and weight loss. After diagnostic testing, she was diagnosed with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis).
What is FIP?
FIP is a serious disease that occurs when feline coronavirus (FCoV) mutates within a cat and triggers an abnormal immune response.
FIP is not simply the result of catching coronavirus. FCoV is extremely common in cats, but only a small percentage of infected cats go on to develop FIP.
What is FCoV?
Feline coronavirus is very common among cats.
It spreads easily, particularly in multi-cat environments.
Most cats infected with FCoV have mild or no clinical signs.
How does FCoV spread?
FCoV is primarily spread through the fecal-oral route, including exposure to contaminated litter boxes and f***s, as well as close contact between cats.
Good hygiene and proper litter-box management can help reduce the risk of transmission.
Who is at risk?
FIP can occur in any cat, but risk is associated with factors such as:
🐱 Young age
🏠 Multi-cat environments
😿 Stress
🧼 Poor hygiene or overcrowding
🧬 Genetic susceptibility
Treatment:
Antiviral therapy, including Bova GS-441524, has dramatically changed the outlook for many cats diagnosed with FIP. Supportive care is also extremely important and may include maintaining nutrition and hydration and treating complications.
Prognosis:
Without effective treatment, FIP was historically considered almost always fatal. Today, with appropriate antiviral therapy and veterinary monitoring, many cats can achieve remission and go on to enjoy a good quality of life.
Regular veterinary monitoring remains essential throughout treatment.

Dr. Gluck was able to obtain antiviral treatment for Sabrina, and we are thrilled to report that just two days after starting treatment, Sabrina was back to her normal self!
