A little look at what we’ve been working on in Nosework over the past few weeks! 🐾👃
I may not have captured everyone, but these photos give you a glimpse into our classes and some of the things we’ve been focusing on.
We’ve been working on reading our dogs—recognizing the difference between general interest and true odor interest, watching their body language, and learning to recognize when they’re actually sourcing odor.
We’ve also been practicing letting our dogs lead the search. That means giving them time to gather information, observing what they’re telling us, and learning when to step in—and when to simply get out of their way and let them work.
We’ve worked on interior searches, exteriors, containers, vehicles, and working through distractions, including natural environmental distractions and other challenges that can come up during a search.
There’s a LOT that goes into Nosework, and these are just some of the things we’ve been focusing on in class. It’s not just about how many searches we can fit into a class—it’s about the quality of each search and what we learn from it.
I also like to video my students during their searches and share those videos with them. Watching yourself and your classmates afterward can be such a valuable learning tool. You may notice something you missed in the moment, see your dog’s behavior from a different perspective, and make notes while everything is still fresh in your mind. I encourage my students to video themselves when they’re practicing at home, too!
Whether you’re trialing or simply enjoying Nosework with your dog, learning to observe and understand your dog is such an important part of the journey.
Great job, everyone! ❤️ I’m so proud of how you’re all doing. Some of you who have been with me for a while have grown SO much, and it’s truly beautiful to watch and be a part of your journey with your dog. 🐾
Keep sniffing, keep learning, and most importantly—keep having fun together! 👃🐕❤️
