"...... For just a bath??"
You don't know how many times groomers hear this. It would be like saying
It’s just taking pictures to a photographer.
It’s just exercising to a personal trainer.
It’s just teaching to a teacher.
If you’ve ever wondered why professional dog grooming costs what it does, there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes that most people never see.
Before we even start, we’re checking your dog’s coat and skin, looking for mats, sores, lumps, bumps, fleas, ticks, ear issues, nail problems and anything unusual.
Then comes the “bath.”
But grooming also means brushing, de-shedding, removing packed undercoat, conditioning, drying, brushing AGAIN, trimming nails, cleaning ears, shaving paw pads and sanitary areas, sc******ng, clipping and creating the actual haircut.
And through all of that, we’re safely handling a living, moving animal. Some dogs stand beautifully. Others are scared, elderly, painful, wiggly, bitey, 100+ pounds, terrified of the dryer or absolutely convinced we are trying to murder them because we touched a toenail. 😂
Then there are the expenses you don't see:
Professional shampoos and conditioners. Clippers. Blades. Scissors. Brushes. Combs. Nail grinders. Grooming tables. Tubs. Professional dryers. Towels. Laundry. Water. Electricity. Cleaning products. Disinfectants. Equipment repairs. Blade and scissor sharpening. Insurance. Payroll. Rent and building expenses.
And when your dog goes home, we're still working. The tub gets cleaned. The table and tools get disinfected. Hair gets cleaned up. Towels get washed. Equipment gets maintained. Then we reset everything and do it all over again for the next dog.
You're also paying for something that can't be bought in a bottle: experience.
Knowing how to safely handle a frightened dog. Knowing which products and techniques work for different coats. Knowing when a mat can safely be removed and when shaving is the kinder choice. Knowing when a senior dog needs a break. Knowing when something on your dog's skin, ears, nails or body doesn't look right and should be brought to your attention.
And let's not forget the groomer's back, shoulders, wrists, hands and knees. 😅 Grooming is HARD physical work.
So when you pay for professional grooming, you're not paying $50, $75 or $100 for shampoo and water.
You're paying for the time, skill, equipment, products, education, overhead and safe handling that goes into caring for your dog from nose to tail.
